it was peaking at around 9, then it just dropped and capped at around 1MB for some reason, now my peak is only 1.8MB

An easy way to remember these things is that if only the first letter is a capital, then we're talking about bite. For example Mb, Mb/s, Mbps, Mbit.
If it's a byte then the second letter will be capitalized as well. MB, MB/s or MBps.
Or in simply terms, the lowest common denominator aka bottleneck determines the overall connection speed.
My Wifi at home can transmit data multiple times faster than my internet connection can handle, so every download is only as fast as my internet connection allows.
I have a 100 Megabit connection, so i get about 12.5 Megabytes per second. A bit more actually as my modem synced with about 110 Megabit. Seems someone favored me.
If you believe that your internet is slower now than it was previously, then you need to contact your internet service provider (ISP).
Things like cobber cables, which a large portion of households around the world still recieve their internet through, are easily affected by how many other people are connected to and using it in the grid that they live in (which usually cause fluctuation in the performance of internet speeds based on cobber).
My best guess however, is that nothing is wrong and you've simply noticed something from a new perspective.
1. What your download speed by your ISP matters. When you go to your ISP to sign a contract to get internet, what plan did you pick? That what matters is the data rate your ISP claims to be providing to you from them, has nothing to do with other services, or websites.
2. Your network card / router / modem are a proxy to giving you access to the said internet, they have a limit what they can transmit, and another limit that set by your ISP base on your plan you picked, hence #1.
Even if you got network card saying you get a 1Gbps, that not what you're going to get, because if you got a plan from ISP for 10Mbps, you're still going to be getting 10Mbps with that network card that claims 1Gbps, that because the card only say it supports up to those speeds, that has nothing to do what your ISP pushes the speed to you, also hence #1.
3. There bit, and bype, the marketing goes by bits because it makes big numbers, and lure people, and there other reasons as well to market things like so, anyways.to explain you understand more below.
8 bits = 1 Byte
1 Byte = 8 bits.
In the marketing work B and b matters so you know which one it refers to, as B for Bytes, and b for bits.
800 Megabits per second = 100 MegaBytes per second
800 Mbps = 100 MBps
90Mbps = 11.25 MBps
4. Wired connection to the source is always going to be better than doing Wifi to the source. And if that your source using satellite it will not be as good as, those that use Coaxial cable, or phone jack cable to connect to the internet. Reason is there latency, stability, and packet loss.
Latency means how much of a delay on getting your data to, and from, just like driving a car vs a bike to go to a shop that far from you.
Stability means having connection, where if you lose connection you you stop getting data to, and from, as there stuttering connection which adds Latency as explain above.
Packet loss means lost data that was failed to be sent, and receive, basically like trying to hear a friend that scream that otherside of the canyon where you're trying to make out what he yelling out to you, and all you understood was Hey ----- out --- the bear ------ -ou, where if you didn't have packet loss you would get "Hey watch out for the bear behind you".
