Steam controller issues after last client update
Hello all! I'm curious if anyone else is encountering the same problem as I am since the last update to the Steam client around the beginning of the month. Essentially what I'm encountering is a decent number of my games which previously were playable with my Steam controller no longer recognize any inputs from the controller if it is configured as such.

As an example, Subnautica used to play just fine with the controller, however after the client update I've had to rebind the controls (in Steam, not in game) to use mouse and keyboard inputs. At that point the game does respond to controller inputs, but as I said that's because the controller is sending keyboard bound inputs.

This is not unique to Subnautica, I have other games which do not work with the controller any more, however I have plenty which do. Devil May Cry V works just fine.

I've tried all manner of fixes for the issue such as:
  • Enabling / Disabling the various controller supports (X-Box, PlayStation, Generic)
  • Setting the game to use "Forced On" / "Force Off" for Steam Input
  • Running games from Big Picture mode
  • Ensuring the Steam client is being run as an Administrator

Has anyone else noticed this issue? Has anyone had any success overcoming this problem? Any help would greatly appreciated. I'm not really all that enthusiastic about having to create custom keyboard bindings for a large swathe of my library.

I have been having these same issues, But in my case I use an Xbox 360 controller. This also started happening to me in the last month or so. Made a post about it, but haven't managed to figure any real fix actions so far.

I just started having the same issue with a few older games after the last Steam Client update. The issue I have is on my PC that I use for racing games with a wheel. Right now, I have at least two games that do not work properly... Horizon Chase Turbo and Ridge Racer Unbounded. Prior to the last update both worked fine with my Xbox One Controller (Wireless) and my G920 wheel which I used XOutput to map the wheel as an Xbox 360 Controller.

Now, after the update, neither game works correctly. In the case of Ridge Racer, the games work fine in the Menu, but when a race starts, I can't accelerate (car just stops/starts like I'm holding brake down the whole time while trying to accelerate). In Horizon Chase Turbo, I can get past the title screen, but then my controller doesn't do anything and the game wants to only respond to a Keyboard.

I posted my issues in the appropriate game forums too, but haven't gotten a response.

Not sure if either of you are going to see this, but I wanted to ping you here on the slim off chance it helps. This is gonna seem kinda dumb, and I'm sorry if it doesn't help. I managed to root out the source of my woes with my Steam controller.

Turns out I'd just bought a new HOTAS for my PC, and when it's plugged in via USB a handful of games will default that to my primary controller input, rendering the Steam controller pretty much useless. If I unplug the joystick then my controller works perfectly well.

So, it may not be the Steam client and its input handling after all, but rather there may be a new input you've added to your system which is causing a conflict? Again, if this doesn't help I'm sorry, but I wanted to add this as it caused me months of frustration which I'm hoping I can help you diagnose and fix as well.
