steam deleted itself?!?!?!
I was just sitting at my computer minding my own business playing a game when suddenly i got the notification that steam wanted to update.
it looked exactly the same as it always does and I clicked it and it started to "update" and suddenly steam was completely uninstalled from my computer!
I did a file search and the shorcut no longer worked because "the file was either changed or moved"

I went on the website and redownloaded steam again and installed it and when i launched it.

the same thing happened, it just deleted itself!

then i did a virus scan and the virus scan came up clean.

then i downloaded steam again and installed it and it went through the update process and it worked and all my games are still there but wtf?

what is going on, have I been hacked?

I never click suspicious links and the only websites I go to are netflix, hulu, wikipedia, youtube and gamefaqs

I just updated Steam and Avast is telling me steam.exe contains the Win32:Evo-gen [Susp] virus and stuck it in the virus chest. I've been searching to see if this is a false positive or not but I can't find any info yet. Maybe your antivirus is doing the same thing and quarantining the steam executable.

I'm going to wait a day and see. Better safe than sorry.
Same here dude! my buddy and just quit a game got some message from someone wanting me to join group. As soon as we hit ignore Roll ' muthaf*%^*n Roll tied ' or something like that. But right now it's not letting me install steam at all...
well, i have avast as well, and it told me my computer was clean.

and the steam client is working now. I re installed it and updated and it's working.
but still, deleting itself twice seems like really odd behavior and i'm worried that i've been compromised. I see no unusual activity.

I did a google search and this appears to have only happened to 2 other people, once in 2013 and once in 2011; typical, whenever I have a technical problem on my computer and i google search it, i never find forum posts newer than 3-5 years old and they almost always have like, a person opened the thread, got a few answers, the problem was never resolved and the thread dies...
or the person says "oh I solved the problem" without giving any details and the thread is closed...
actually...I'm looking in my avast virus quarantine chest..and there is 2 copies of my steam client in there that were placed in there today right about the time this issue occurred...apparently my avast gave a false positive, I dunno.

Happened to me and a friend. We reinstalled steam but have to install all the games again even on my SSD as well. Really bizarre and a buzz kill
Same issue here. Ignored & it´s back, good as always! ;)
There is an issue with the latest update and Avast vuris protection, check your avast vuris chest and scroll to the bottom, you will see items in there from steam right click restore and whitelist those items and steam will work again.

I also had this problem.
this was a false positive. No virus from steam was actually there. just restore from virus chest and whitelist steam. :steamhappy:
Anytime you're not sure - that is if it's a virus or if the latest AV defs are now good, in your Virus Chest you can always right-click and re-scan. Then if it says it's clean, right-click and restore.

Avast was actually pretty quick correcting this. The virus defs I got the very next day didn't complain.

As much of a pain as this is at times, I'd rather an occasional false positive than really get, and then unknowningly propogate an infection!
