Well then the world over, people should be paid more to cover for inflation... oh wait, that doesn't happen.
Well if this pricing bull carries on, other websites are just going to sell it cheaper and undercut Valve. Their greed is shocking and will ultimately turn around and bite them in the ass. Screw inflation as well games went from £30-35 to £50 in the space of a few years.
Publishers set pricing. Publishers set their sales discounts. Here and on every other legitimate authorized reseller. The difference with digital download sales is that ultimately you're buying from the publisher, rather than from the middleman/distributor. Sure, you'll be buying it from Steam, Amazon, GMG, etc., but unlike a physical retailer they didn't buy the stock, they're just facilitating the sale (almost like consignment but not quite).
If you do a quick search of the boards, you'll see this very common issue brought up time and time again.
Well people DO get paid more, this is why there are yearly pay rises. The UK has been suffering with a very poor economy over the past few years and some people may have had pay freezes, making the situation worse.
Games are cheaper now than they have ever been.
Back in 1986 Zelda for the NES cost £59.99. This is a game that fitted onto a tiny cartridge in the space of a few Megabytes. Taking inflation into account, in todays money, that is £162 for that game. But games don't cost that much, they are 3 times cheaper than they should be following inflation.
Secondly, games back then didn't need a lot of extra work put into them. You didn't need HD graphics, huge texture, voiceover artists, HD sound effects, orchestral work, etc. Adding these into the mix and games should technically cost - A LOT - more than they do!
(Also bandwidth isn't "free" and generally costs more than it does to mass replicate a few cd cases and dvd disks)
