How to remove the "What's New" shelf from your Steam Library yourself.
Firstly, let me acknowledge that all I did was research what others had previously done, apply it to the newer version of the Steam client and put it all in single post (at least the first I can find).

Thanks go to Randoc Gaming for his Youtube video (found at)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMC3pSVViiA

Additional thanks to HopelessGamer and DrShadow who helped him with the original version of this.

This information may be posted by others elsewhere, but this is where I found it.

My intent with this post is not to claim any credit, but to signal boost a working solution to an annoying and unnecessary issue.

Ok, so if you’re like me, you don’t much care for the “What’s New” shelf constantly taking up 20% of your screen with updates for a game you purchased 5 years ago and played for 3 hours.

Here is a Step-by-Step on how to solve that issue (I recommend checking out the video I linked above if you have further questions).

- Firstly open an explorer window and navigate to your steam folder, in Windows 10 this is typically this is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

- Right Click and create a new folder called ‘skins’ (This used to be installed by default but later versions of the Steam client no longer include it)

- Enter this newly created ‘\Program Files (x86)\Steam\skins\’ folder and create another new folder called ‘NoWhatsNew’ (Note* you can call this folder whatever you want)

- From the main Steam folder (\Program Files (x86)\Steam ) right-click on the ‘resource’ folder and select ‘Copy’ command from the Windows menu or press 'Ctrl + C' (the 'Copy' Shortcut).

- Navigate into the ‘\Program Files (x86)\Steam\skins\NoWhatsNew\’ folder (the one you just created) and press ‘Ctrl + V’ (the shortcut for ‘Paste’) or you can right-click and select ‘Paste’ from the Windows menu.

- Enter this newly created ‘\Program Files (x86)\Steam\skins\NoWhatsNew\resource’ folder and scroll down until you see a file named ‘webkit.css’ (you may only see ‘webkit’ depending on your folder settings).

- Right-click on webkit.css and select ‘Open with notepad’ (or any other text editor)

- In the editor scroll to the bottom of the file and click in the final ‘ } ‘ then press enter so that the cursor is on the line below it.

- Copy & Paste the following information into the file (make sure you are at the bottom)

.libraryhome_WhatsNewContainer_gdZT7 {
display: none; }

- Save the file, you are done with the 'hard' part.

- Now all you need to do is run Steam, once its open click on the 'Steam' button (above and left of the 'STORE' button in the the steam client).

- Select 'Settings' to bring up the settings menu.

- Select 'Interface' from the settings menu.

- Click on the 'Skins' drop down menu and select the 'NoWhatsNew' (or whatever you named it.

- Steam will ask to restart, so let it.

And your done, no more "What's New". It should be gone 'forever' (or at least until the Steam Client has a major update that changes how Skins work.)

What you are doing by following this step-by-step guide;

You are creating a ‘Skin’ (a visual overlay for the Steam Client) that changes how certain information is displayed. In this case you are creating a ‘skin’ that is the default Steam client, just without displaying the ‘What’s New’ Shelf.

Hope this helps you if your wanting “What’s New” gone. I’ve tried to be as descriptive as possible to make sure that even an amateur PC user can follow the instructions. For the more experienced, this is a simple thing to do.

As a final note, while I make no guarantee towards this as a working solution (read this as, use at your own risk, it's not my fault), all you are doing is making a copy of a Valve created resource file and editing its components to remove an aspect of the overlay. The absolute worst thin you will need to do (if you completely mess up this process) is reinstall the steam client (not your games, just the client).

I hope this helps people looking for a solution.

Peace!

Why remove it, its updates and whats new with our games. Keeps me informed?
If I dont want to see it on some games I just rightclick that news and select remove this update'
There is also gear next to What's New with options.
Game devs want to inform their customers of updates / news in their games easier and it's been asked for a long time.

If the shelf thumbnails is too big go to Steam top left>settings>library > small elements and other options to set

Why not remove it? I think a person should be free to choose. This information is not telling people they SHOULD remove it, only giving them the information how, so they can choose for themselves.
