Trading Cards and Badges
How are cards obtained? Is it just single player or can I get them on multiplayer? Is there a certain amount of time you need to play for cards?

Each store page shows if the game has trading cards. You play the game to get about half of the total amount of cards (cards start dropping after 2 hours of playtime). The other half you need to trade for or buy from the community market.

Free to Play games requires in-game purchases, and you'll get one card for every $9 you spend.

Do you know if it's only for single player or multiplayer?

It doesn't differentiate like that. It's enough that the product is running for more than 2 hours and you'll start getting cards on certain time intervals. The whole time could be spent in the main menu.

Just make sure the game in question shows that you're eligible for card drops here: http://steamcommunity.com/my/badges/

The only series that I can think of that has separate cards for singleplayer and multiplayer is Call of Duty, and that's somewhat because they've made singleplayer and multiplayer separate entries on the Steam -library too.
