Memory leak while downloading
Hello,

Due to a hard drive dying on me I had to reinstall my entire steam library (yay me >_<) but I've noticed that when I'm downloading the games the RAM usage goed from the usual 1,8 GB used (idle stuff) all the way up to the full 16GB available, slowly creeping up over the course of an hour or 2. Then the usual happens, windows craps itself and restarts the PC.

I'm positive that it's a memory leak caused by something happening during downloading.
When I noticed it I unplugged the pc from the internet (to make sure some malware can't send data to wherever) and ran both my anti-virus and malwarebytes. The results were clean.
When plugged back in the internet I noticed the RAM slowly filling itself again and figured it must be somthing else. Rebooted the PC and noticed that it was normal for 30 mins. Launched steam and up it went again, ever so slowly filling my RAM and only stopping when I paused the downloads.

I deleted everything in the steam folder, leaving only the steam.exe, but it didn't fix anything. Any idea's how to prevent this from happening?

Cheers, Para

steam generally doesn't care that much about overclocking, doesn't perform any worse with overclocked GPU's and CPU.
There's no program in the list that doesn't belong there, I did delete some that I don't use anymore which is always nice, but there wasn't any improvement. (you will have to apologise me for not trusting the internet with pics of my programs list, who knows ^^)

I'm at a complete loss with regards to the memory loss, and at this moment I'm too hungry to look further :/ Thanks for the help though

I been on steam 12 years and especially in the first years there were always issues with it.

if safemode+networking works you have something installed in normal windows.
it is as simple as 1+1

I understand that, but there's nothing on here that could create this leak. All programs which are installed are trusted, and never caused anything of the like in the past. The only thing that could cause it would be windows 10, but I'm not about to delete system32 (though I've heard tales that it could improve the speed by a large margin)

well it can not both be true were I come from.
either safemode works normal and it is something installed on the system.
or safemode does not work either and it is a problem outside the system.

maybe you have a wireless and did not use the wireless software in safemode.
anything can bug it as you can see for yourself.

Again Im somewhat dubious that Steam is the culprit. If the application is not freeing the memory the OS still knowas about it and will show it as allocated.

Same problem here. If the application was showing how much memory it was using then it wouldn't be a problem, but memory leaks are allocated memory that the system "forgets" what program originally asked for it, so it doesn't actually show what program is using all the memory.

old thread but what the heck ^^ I fixed it though. The problem for me was in the drivers of my Killer Ethernet Port. If you google "killer ethernet memory leak fix" you'll get to a page with great instructions on how to fix it.

Thank you so much! This has been bugging me for a year. Never found out the cause before I found your post. Finally no more memory leak!

Was a good idea up until the point of "Pay to fix" came up :(

So I had the same exact problem and learned today it's the Killer networking manager suit. If you uninstall it and just install the base drivers you will remove the memory leak. I've had this leak for a year and this finally worked

I seemed to have fixed it by letting the KILLER network program(s) prioritize steam over most everything. Seems to behave itself now. Although imo i shouldnt have to do this for a ethernet port connection program. Just really overcomplicated ...
