Have activation, but can't download

I own a game but the install disk won't load. How do I download a game that I own the activation key for without having to buy it from Steam?

In the Steam client, click "Add a Game" in the bottom left corner and then "Activate a Product on Steam" and enter the CD key. Then you can download it, or if you want to install it from the CD, read this:

You haven't said what game it was, but not all retail games can be activated on Steam, even if Steam sells it. It's up to the game's publisher.

I'm afraid the so-called activation key you own has nothing to do with Steam.

Thanks for the help! I am new to steam. My son recommended I join, but I'm an old man not very technically endowed!! LOL!!
