Avast AV detected steam.exe as virus ??
Hey guys, this is really weird ,earlier afternoon today I was playing on STEAM everything ws fine, so now it's night, and just now which is few mins ago and now Im writting here. When I tried to launch STEAM, my Avast Anti-Virus ( latest ) detected my STEAM is a Virus, something like WIn32.Gen-EVO or something I recall.
So I restored it back from the Virus Chest and set it to Exclusion list.

I didn't even download / visit and suspicious sites lately or recently. Also AVAST didn't had any updates recently.

I just came back and instantly launch STEAM and this happened. After my session during afternoon I just turn off my PC never did anything else as well.

Was wondering anyone else got this problem is it just a false alarm ??
It happened before for my CS : GO as well last time.

EDIT : I think AVAST did updated the Virus Definiions before I launch STEAM.
The Update stated @ 24-Oct 2015 around 5 PM.....now as of the time Im writting now is about 8 PM, could this be the culprit ??

Same here. Didn't dowload anything, never clicked a link. Performed a full system scan and a root kit scan, both came up clean.

What gives?

EDIT:

Everything in my account seems fine and Steamguard (mail and phone) never kicked in.

SHA1 and signature are correct
SHA256 is correct
Virustotal finds no threat
Memory scan clean
No unexpected processes are running
full system scan is clean
root kit scan is clean

Pretty sure it is a false positve. I wonder what triggered it.

When I did use Avast .. I will say that out of *ALL* of the free alternatives available at the time Avast had the highest rate of false positives.

I've dumped it long ago and I couldn't be happier.

Been using Avast for years. This is the first time this happened to me.

Interesting.. I have not had good luck with it.

I can say its better than Norton Antivirus. I'm sure its a false positive though.

Yeah. Avast decided to kill off steam.exe. Luckily it didn't delete the whole folder.

So far, I think it is a false postive as well. Interesting enough the OP ran into the same problem as I did, timing or coincidence?

Avast did update its definitions right before this occured. I am highly suspicious this is the trigger.
So now we knew is a False Alarm, but Im curious, why and how does these sort of things happen ??? I mean it's fine for so long all sudden it happened !!
I been using for 3 Years now...this is first time for steam.exe, but there are quite number of times for other things.

After a Google search, I see this problem has been reported years ago for the first time. Must be on Avast's end and I don't think it is a coincidence this happened right after a definition update.

:sniperelite: What gives Avast

Sometimes they break even the operation system.
Have a second but on demand antivirus to check false postitves and move on.

So what AV your using now ? Im using Free Version though...I used to use Kaspersky I even paid for it ! But one day it decided to persistantly give me problems !
It caused my PC to BSOD, I've tried all solutions no fix, I gave up, totally wasted my Subscription....and moved to AVAST since so far it's been smooth except for these few false alarm....
it just happened to me too, and now my steam app can't access the store...what to do?

Rather than use necromancy on a 2015 thread, maybe look up the threads on the front page first. http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/143387886725061485/
