The wireless adapters also work great on Linux with xow controller. Being able to install the adapter on Linux and sync the controller easier than in Windows because you get actual feedback from the driver (not that you actually need it, it simply works) is just too much to bear.
Basically, you can have Airplane mode enabled JUST for your xbox wireless adapter. And you don't get any notification about airplane mode is enabled. Windows actually shows EVERYWHERE that airplane mode is DISABLED. But go figures, when you go into the deeper possible window with airplane mode settings.... It will show Airplane mode is enabled JUST for the xbox adapter. I was able to reproduce the steps for my computer to get stuck in this painful situation.
And that's it... From now on the driver will tell you all is fine, lights will blink but now it will be stuck FOREVER in airplane mode disregarding how much you ENABLE/DISABLE airplane mode. It will not work again unless you find the "hidden" setting for your xbox wireless adapter airplane mode. PEOPLE IS REINSTALLING WINDOWS 10 because of this misbehavior!
Here is the solution as posted by user AndrewH001:
Had the exact same issues as everybody else i.e. uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and controller not pairing with the adapter even though the LEDS were blinking.
After reading Pyrhuss's post, even though my flight mode was off already I went to settings>>network & Internet>>flight mode, and sure enough, under wireless adapters Xbox Wireless was turned off. Turned it back on and everything works fine.
Thanks Pyrhuss, this had been driving me mad!
So here i am November 18 2020. Just got the new Xbox controller series x in the mail with the dongle. Dongle didn't work. I did this and can say that it does indeed work with the NEW xbox controller. THANKS EVERYONE INVOLVED!!
For a 64 bit machine, go to the Windows Update page and download "Microsoft - Other hardware - Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows" with version 21.50.45.656. (I don't know what to download for 32 bit...but who's using 32 bit Windows in 2020 anyway?)
You should now be able to extract and install the adapter.
Before wasting a day searching/installing drivers for Xbone adaptor please check airplane mode in windows 10 settings and toogle "xbox wireless" on. I remember activating it for something else and now i realize that this thing prevented xbox one controller/Xbone adapter to work. Thanks @Locoxella
Hey Mx_Passi, are you running Win10 20H2x64, and did you try 21.50.45.656? I have basically an identical system to you and 21.50.45.656 worked for me.
Hey, yeah I deleted the driver. Pluged the device into usb and it shows XBOX ACC without installed driver. I installed DriverVer=12/08/2015,21.50.45.656 as you mentioned and it freaks the system up. No it shows still XBOX ACC but without problem. When I try to check driver version the is no version. Can you again check your version?
