I got my adapter to work on Windows 7, you have to download a different driver file from the Microsoft update site. If you follow OP's directions to search, you will see a bunch of files listed.
The one you want for Windows 7 (and I presume Win 8) is "Microsoft - Generic Controller - Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows", it is dated 1-1-2015 (I guess Microsoft had it working long ago).
Go to device manager, find the device labeled XBOX ACC and choose update driver, choose the manual folder search, and point to a directory where you have unzipped the downloaded file from Microsoft.
This worked for me, I briefly tested it. You have to connect your controller with the button on the dongle, holding the xbox button turns the controller off.
I wouldn't mind a steam gift either!
I did the exact same thing, and it appeared to all be working, but then the controller doesn't work in games. Any ideas?
Which games? I tried it on a couple games and it worked just fine, rumble worked too.
Mad Max and Dirt Rally so far. I figured after those two further testing was pointless. They work when the controller is plugged in by cable so I have nfi what is going on.
