What's wrong with my Motherboard or RAM smart people of Steam?
I've bought 8gb of ram but they cam in a pack of two RAM sticks. (I'll post links of items below)
My motherboard can only display things on the screen if one Ram is in so only 4 GB. If I put more than one, the PC won't display anything on the screen. I've put them in different slots and have talked with Kingston and MSI already so both sticks work. I just need to know if this has to do with the BIOS or not and if you can help me update it since I've never done it before. Also Kingston said to get 1600 mhz ram sticks as 1800+ is too much. HELP ME.

Here is the Motherboard and RAM :

MSI B85-G41 PC Mate ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory

You should use 1600 MHZ RAM or less for a B85 board. If you want higher than 1600 then get a Z97 mobo and ideally an overclockable K CPU like i5-4690K. Those are for overclocking and higher than 1600 is considered overclocking. The mobo manual says what memory slots to use for one or more sticks and if you want dual channel or not. The slots are color coded sometimes. You can lookup a mobo on it's official page in the support section for memory compatibility.

You may get it working with a bios reset. I'm not sure if you should do that with such a lack of knowledge. Getting a 1600 kit is best. The main thing is setup your boot device order after a bios reset. You can mostly ignore everything else. If you only have one storage device with an OS then you don't need to mess with the boot order. It would cycle through until Windows is found.

What version of windows are you using? And is it 32 bit or 64 bit. 32 bit windows will only read up to 3 GB of ram no matter how much ram you got in your pc. You can have 32 GB installed in your pc but if you are only using the 32 bit version of windows then you will lose out on 29 GB of ram.

You probably have to set the RAM timings to a lower setting in the BIOS.

try both dimms in same colored slots

boot to bios, and select the xmp profile for 1600 or 1866

as _|_ suggested, place both memory module into the black slots or both into the blue slots.

or place 1 memory module into slot 0 (if slots are numbered/paired 0/2, 1/3) and go into bios to see settings of memory (auto-detect) and save settings.

or remove cmos battery for 5 minutes, insert memory modules into slot 0,2 (if slots are numbered/paired 0/2, 1/3), re-insert cmos battery, then turn on computer and see what happens.

Your mobo does not support Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory. Look in the manual for a Vendors list of compatible RAM.

Crucial Ballistix Sport 32GB Kit (8GBx4) DDR3 1600 (PC3-12800) 240-pin UDIMM BLS4KIT8G3D1609DS1S00 / BLS4CP8G3D1609DS1S00 Should be compatible

Sorry, that is a link for 32 GB Ram. However that same link will show you 8 and 16 GB options for compatible Ram.

Here it is. http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Ballistix-PC3-12800-BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00-BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00/dp/B006WAGGUK/ref=pd_bxgy_147_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0W04YFJWC37N5AHJ6RTF

Good advice. 1866 memory usually also has a xmp profile for 1600 setting as well.

Also, dig around the bios setup to see if you can turn channel interleaving off.

If that fails, do a CMOS reset. (either a reset jumper of pull the battery). Then try selecting the 1600 profile from xmp again.

The compatible memory list is only the list of memory that has been successfully tested. It's a list most people usually disregard with no issues.

But if you can't get the above to work, try with an endorsed pair of 1600 memory. If that fails you know you have a faulty motherboard that only runs on one channel.

mobo qvl list for ram are useless
there are so many models of ram they cannot possibly test them all

over 99% of new ram kits will work on the board

only issues iv seen is using ram over 1.55v on intel 115x builds, but thats when trying to use 4 dimms
2 dimms will work but cook the imc on the cpu and it will no longer be able to run 4 dimms

How would I do that if I can't even see what's on the screen
