Mic not working *SOLVED*
The problem started earlier today while playing CS:GO. Players in-game could not hear me.
I tested my mic in Steam's voice settings, and received no indication that it was working (no sound bars or voice relay)

I then tried the following:
-Setting my mic to the default sound device
-Testing my mic in the Windows sound window
-reinstalling all audio drivers in task manager
-Testing my mic in other programs (Audacity, Teamspeak, Skype)
-Testing my mic in steam on a spare laptop, which worked fine
-Stopping my firewall and real time scanning processes(McAfee)
-Testing another microphone plugged into the back of my PC
-testing a relay voice command in CS:GO
-Setting my mic to non-exclusive mode in its properties
-and finally removing my games from the steam folder and reinstalling steam

As for virus checking, I scanned a few days ago with no results but I am rescanning currently

The problem seems to be that the steam voice plugin isn't initializing with the sound input driver or at least isn't hooking right as the Sound Boost option is disabled for both mics despite one having sound boost available in its properties. I know their are workarounds for each specific game, but I'd much rather get steam to use its higher quality codecs and not have to mess with it.

Any help and support is much appreciated

Edit: Solved! I figured it out, another application was conflicting with steam. Probably some audio application. If any of you are having a similar problem, end processes in task manager until your mic begins working again. Thanks for all the offers for help!

I am having this same issue. However, I do not have NVIDIA Geforce Experience installed. I am running an EVGA 1060 however. Does that automatically install Geforce Expereience?
Maybe yes. Check it!

check the audio levels in the steam settings. that might be the problem. also go into the windows settings for you mic and try to raise the audio levels on that. My problem was just Geforce but there could be millions of other problems that prevent your mic from working. also check the in-game audio levels for the mic and make sure those are up
I don't have GeForce ( at least I don't think I do ).........I have checked all the levels and everything like that but for somereason I still cannot get this darn thing to work and my boy is drivingmy nuts about it lol
I had this problem too. I now feel like an idiot (:steamfacepalm:) because the solution is simple: after assembling my computer, I disabled Cortana, camera, mic, etc. Yesterday, after plugging in my mic, which automatically enabled Cortana, trying to disable Cortana, I stumbled upon the Microphone Privacy settings and enabled my mic.

I hope this helps! :steamhappy:
Fodder can you please tell me where these settings are?......I am sorry to keep bugging but I have to figure this out ASAP

The mic problem Fodder is talking about was introduces with the Windows 10 1803 update which released in April. This doesn't apply to you.
Omega,

can you help me figure this out then please!
So if you test it in steam it works just fine but not in game? If thats the case, it is likely the game itself and not the system.
yes it works in a mic test and it works on windows recorder but it doesnt work in murder mystery

DUDE! I've been trying to fix this for months. Your advice is what did it for me. Windows settings, privacy, microphone, allow apps to access your microphone. It was turned off. Turning it on solved all my problems. THANK YOU! I'd have never solved it without your post specifically.
WHERE CAN I FIND THE PRIVACY SETTINGS IN WINDOWS 7

if you have win 10, just do a search for "microphone privacy settings"

you probably wont even have to type the whole thing out before auto-fill does the rest
