Steam games in 1080i
Ive recently noticed that games I run through Steam are playing in 1080i instead of 1080p. Its only Steam games though. When I run a Uplay specific game it plays in 1080p.

Just so you know, this is only a recent occurrence. It used to run then just fine about a week or so ago.

Im using a laptop (970m) connected to my Panasonic Viera tv.

Ive been through all the settings I can think of in steam, to no avail.

Any suggestions at all?

in intel hd control panel, set the refresh rate to 60hz

Its already on it.

Oddly enough, if i select 'windowed' in a games graphics settings, it puts it to 1080p, but then plays slightly stuttery!

As before, Uplay games look as expected, only Steam games dont.

Are you sure that you have your tv set to 1080p, and not 1080i? Are you also sure that your tv is not 1080i? Many tvs will claim 1080p, when in fact they are not. Box specs lie... look your model up on the internet and find a thrid party look on it (like a review site or similar), not the manufacture or site that sells them.

I can confirm that it is definitely a 1080p tv.

My tv also tells you what the resolution is when you switch to different things (ie PC games, PS4, Sky channels, etc...)

Its just strange how it has been fine for all the months and months Ive had it and been using it, to suddenly say 1080i now, but only on Steam games. Uplay ones state 1080p, so does the desktop and anything else I do.

For reference, here's a link to the tv I using http://www.reevoo.com/p/panasonic-tx-l47e5b

You more than likely have a setting somewhere causing the issue. Just play around with settings from everything.

What cable are you using to connect it? Ensure it's DisplayPort 1.2+, DVI (Duel-Link) or HDMI 1.3+ cable. Avoid using adapters/convertors and stick with a digital signal (rather than analog).

Are you using any scaling (Windows or Nvidia scaling)?

Are you using GeForce Experence? If so, are the games running as DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution)? Set them to native resolution (1920x1080).

Check under Control Panel > Nvidia Control Panel. Ensure "Let the 3D application decide" is set and under Manage 3D settings you restore the defaults (Don't change them under there, rather GeForce Experence or custom profiles can be made individually for each game, if desired).

I'm using a HDMI Cable but im not sure of the type. I seem to rememberit being a 1.3 though.

As for scaling...how do I check that?

I'll have a play with the Nvidia control panel settings like you've suggested and see if that makes a difference. I have made changes to it in the past, so I'll reset them all.

No success so far, unfortunately. I reset many of my settings to their defaults in Nvidia Control Panel, but this didnt work. In fact, I actually made some of my games play worse. I did a system restore to just before the weekend, so now Im back to where I was when I started this topic.

Since, my last update, I have tried this on my gaming monitor, which my desktop is connected to and it is changing to 1080i there too and causing a noticeable flicker on the screen, changing back to 1080p then I exit the game.

Ive been wondering if it could be a Steam update that could have potentially gone wrong on my laptop, as it's only Steam that's affected. Is there a way of rolling back the updates on Steam to an older version? What if I uninstall it and start fresh? Will it already have the current update or download a vanilla version which needs updating?

Just trying to think of things that could have caused this without me actually changing anything!

One other thing; I loaded up Grid 2 and that played perfectly in 1080p at 60fps, so it doesnt happen to every game, which is strange.

Pro Tip: Don't use the control panel to control game settings. You open yourself up to a whole world of issues.

Highly doubtful that Steam would be the cause, unless it is the overlay that is causing issues. Disable the Steam overlay (Steam > Settings > In-Game > Uncheck 'Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game') and see if that helps.

I'll try that, although it may be a few days until I respond as I am working away from home as of today and dont have immediate access to a full HD tv.

I have actually looked in to the Steam Overlay discussion section, but couldnt find anything as specific as my problem, but it could very well be related. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Still seems to be an issue, even after disabling the overlay. I'm going to attempt to reinstall steam to see if that makes a difference. We'll see what happens.

I feel like you have a limited knowledge of what is truely happening and that makes it that much harder to help you over text.

I have the feeling that this is not truely a 1080p vs 1080i situation. If your desktop is truely set to 1920x1080/60hz and the game in question is set to 1920x1080/60hz, then you should be displaying at said resolution.

If not, I highly doubt that this is software based. Are you sure that your HDMI cable is the correct type? You said in an earlier comment that you "remember it being a 1.3". When troubleshooting, it is best to know for sure and not just assume. Also, it is not just a version number of the cable to check, makes sure that the version of the port on your GPU matches the version of cable connected (your GPU came with requirements needed to display properly, check the manual or look up the exact model on the internet).
