Disk Write Error
So I just upgraded from a 256GB Samsung 850 Pro to a 512GB 850 Pro, backed up nearly 1TB of data from my 4TB Seagate storage drive onto a external drive and reinstalled Windows 10 (hadn't done a fresh install in almost 4 years). So I had a lot of junk and the reinstall helped a lot!

I use my SSD for games where the SSD makes a noticable difference and the HDD for older/rarely played games. So I had a LOT of downloading to do! Over 1TB of games for my HDD, so I ran downloads on STEAM, Origin and Uplay all at the same time and transfering over my old files (not everything, cleaned out the junk when I backed up my files) and let it run overnight.

When I checked on it the next day all the Origin and Uplay games had downloaded successfully and my files all transfered. But, with STEAM about half the games going onto my HDD showed as having completely downloaded, but said paused and Disk Write Error where the time left would be. So I deleted all the failed downloads and reinstalled, they all failed again... games that had succeded before will reinstall just fine.

So I ran a Disk Error Check, took about 10 minutes and found no errors. Ran the defragment check and my drive is 14% fragmented. I don't know what is going on, one thought was maybe the HDD overheated, but it's only 5900RPM and is in a massive Cooler Master Storm Trooper case and has a dedicated compartment and 120mm fan cooling it (which I set to high). So I really need help figuring out what's going on.

Is my HDD dying? If so I just finished my Windows 10 reinstall so nows a good time as it's not to big of a pain. I'll trash the 4TB HDD (never going to buy another HDD after using a SSD) and just get a 1 or 2 TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

some paragraphs would be easier to read.

I would check if the download pat does not have folder names with weird characters.

and check this FAQ.

Sorry, first forum.

There are no folders for the games that have the Disk Write Error.

Link doesn't work. Found some things online but nothing seemed to work (atleast what I saw and tried).

Thanks! :)

you selected a path before you downloaded so there is a path to check.
but if it is the same as the other downloads that is not it.

so did you try to move steam as the link suggested?
edit:I think you mean the fixes do not work.

Here's the link again, without the FAQ. as the prefix.

Yes that would be D:/SteamLibrary , but the supposedly downloaded games that have Disk Write Error have no files in that folder unlike the ones that did download.

No I haven't tried moving the folder, why would that change anything? Why would some work in a folder and some not? I have this weird thing for keeping everything perfectly organized on my PC (after years of having a very messy PC I'm sick of it, lol) and would really really like to keep all my games in the same folder as possible. Though I'll give it a go anyway and report back.

I tried installing Bioshock Infinite on drive D, failed, drive C, succeded.

OK... lol, didn't notice those files. Deleted one and tried downloading the game and it went... weird... Thanks man!! Worked for me!! :D

THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you everyone else for the help as well!

BTW, does anyone know why my HDD would have been 14% fragmented after having just formated and re-partitioned it the day before?

I think what you need to do is reinstall a new steam exe on your new computer don't copy over the old one or any old files connected with it minus that of the folder your games are saved in, steam recognizes your games being on your old hard drive and not your current one, to fix the issue, go into your steam settings, go to downloads, click on steam library folders and add your new library folder to your new drive, once done copy your files for your games to the folder they are usually located in, if the game shows you write error again verify game cache and you should be good to go, this process also work for adding your old games or new ones onto an external hard drive.
