Copy of steam in my Window.old folder
I've got a copy of steam in my windows.old folder using up a ton of space which I desperately need. I basically rebuilt my entire computer a couple months ago, during which I installed a new hard drive and re-installed steam and all my games to that one. I since discovered that my space on my C drive was shrinking, searched and found the old copy of steam eating up a large chuck of my space on my C drive (38 GB).

So what I need to know is... is it okay to delete it? If not how can I tell? Are there any files that I would need to move to the new drive from the windows.old folder before deleting? Is there a specific way that it needs to be deleted from the windows.old folder?

In Dire need of space,

Thank you.

Sure its ok to delete it. You can delete your whole Windows.old anyway.

I wasn't sure, I sort of, kind of glanced at the transferring steam to a new HD article after the fact, so I am/was slightly worried about deleting anything I might need to run my games or having an account issue of some kind.

Thanks for the info though.

Do you want to scavenge the old Steam installation or do you have a new one that you're using?

I have a new installation on my 2nd HD that I'm using, the one my C drive is the one I'm trying to find out if it's okay to delete without anything going wrong.

Thanks!

The folder "Window.old" is a copy of your previous Operating System, so at any time you wanted to go back to it - Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Go back to Windows 7 (or 8.1).

I'm not quite sure why you would have a copy of steam under it? If so, removing the Steam folder from that would be fine, it just will be removed if you ever decide to recover your old Operating System and you would need to re-install and download again.

You have steam installed in another location right (with all the game data).

You can get rid of the entire "Windows.old" folder if you want to save space and have opted to stick with Windows 10 (working without any issues). The Windows disk cleanup tool will actually remove the "Windows.old" folder for you, when low on space and it's been about a month or more after upgrading.

You might also want to use this tool - CCleaner:

It's extremely good spring cleaning the PC and freeing up disk space by removing temporary files, old installation folders, and internet cache, etc.

I'm currently using Winsows 7 Home Premium 64 bit ED. will I have to upgrade to windows 10 (which is a option for me apparently) to get the clean system tool that will remove the Windows.old folder for me or is there another way (in windows 7) that it should bee deleted?

Thanks in advance.

Just delete it like you delete folders om Windows. Have you ever deleted a folder?

If you're still on Win 7, then it's even an older "Windows.old" folder (containing Win XP, Vista, or whatever version you had before a custom/upgrade install of Win 7), you probably won't need and it would be well dated now.

Start button > In the search box, type "Disk Cleanup" (without quotes), and then select it from the list. It might ask you for the drive letter to cleanup, in which case select C:\ (your main).

In the Disk Cleanup dialog box, on the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files.

Select the Previous Windows installation(s) check box, and any other check boxes for the files you want to delete, and then click OK and run it. It will get rid of the "Windows.old" folder and more automatically for you.
