Steam can't connect/OpenVPN solution
Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone with networking experience can help me with my Steam connection issues. I am studying in Germany for a semester, and at my new school Steam will not connect, always saying "Steam is having trouble connecting to the Steam servers"

I believe this is due to my school's network security, and when I contacted an administrator about this problem, he said he couldn't help me, but mentioned something about openvpn to fix the problem. I've talked to another student, and he claims that many students use openvpn, because they can't even use Spotify without it.

Anyways, I know nothing about networking things. I followed a guide for openvpn. I installed it, downloaded a configuration setting file, ran it using "run as administrator", and hit 'connect', however it refuses to work. I've tried many different config files for different countries with both DDNS and IP. I am noticing in the text field that it says "WARNING: No server certificate verification method has been enabled." though I'm not sure if this is the problem.

Every forum I find to try and fix this is helplessly complicated. It seems I would have to take college classes to understand all of this. Can someone please help me get Steam connected?Otherwise, I will be without games for 4 months!

Just put steam into offline mode, using vpns carries the risk of getting your account banned.

Use a VPN but make sure its a local german company! Steam will think you are trying to get around purchase barriers otherwise. DON'T CHANGE YOUR COUNTRY! They will lock your account. But instead of openvpn you should just pay the price for a professional vpn. You'll take a huge reduction in speed otherwise. Some are pretty cheap and usually have good tech support to get you up and running.

I cannot download games while steam is in offline mode.

Yeah, something told me that I shouldn't change my country. But regardless, the connection is failing.

Thanks for the idea of finding a professional vpn. But it seems like a lot of students here use openvpn, but they made it sound simple! Its really complicated according to the instructions I'm finding!

can't you just tether your mobile phone to the computer and login to steam with the internet from that?
than enable the VPN and see if you can download updates.

Well, we are not allowed to use wifi here, because I'm assuming they consider it a security risk.

However we ARE allowed to use OpenVPN, because I just talked to an IT person here by email, and that is what many students here use to get access to Skpe, Spotify, etc.

It's still not working though, and I just can't understand the instructions to get this to work.

it is not wifi it is 3g or 4g you are using on the phone , feel free to connect it with a cable to your computer and there will be no wifi.

try to attack server, open your command prompt and finding IP server or name computer server with 'net view' in CMD and next you make flood request server, write "ping (ip server / name computer server) -l 65500 -t", open many command prompt and write it until RTO. just suggest tq

Hey guys. It seems that there is a help guide on this university's website to get OpenVPN running. If I can get this running, you don't think I'll have a problem with Steam do you? I mean, I'm using a config file that the school made, and I'm almost 100% positive that they wouldn't mask the location.

Just making sure :)

Thanks for all the advice guys!
