Steam pop up saying I have a virus- NEED HELP

If I idle in steam for long enough a pop up shows saying I have a virus and I should call a number for support. It is obviously a fake scam but I am afraid to press ok to agree with the popup. Anyone else having a problem like this?

yeah I used malwarebytes to scan and it didnt pick up anything. Should I uninstall Steam if this doesn't work?

Make sure u scan with ur antivirus to and just backup steam apps and user data folder and reinstall

so its still not fixed try ending all task and services even steam and etc and try windows defender and maybe adwcleaner

delete this folder C:\Users\...your name...\AppData\Local\Steam\htmlcache

It did find some things, and only in the steam app does it appear. It doesn't pop up in any other web browser like chrome or firefox.

in the htmlcache folder on 9/30 a file was created called ChromeDWriteFontCache, idk if that has anything to do with it.

I think it is resolved now, deleting the htmlcache folder and the adds stopped appearing!

I spent a long time looking for the answer to this problem.

This is the answer.

You don't need to reformat your drive, or even delete Steam. Once the virus is eliminated, just delete the htmlcache folder and it will stop coming back. It's just a cache, so it won't be a problem for Steam.

Please report back to these threads when you find a solution, even though they're really old. It helps a lot of people.
