Steam pages of the client went dark
Is this happening to anyone else? I got that client update today (October 7th), the one asking you to add a phone number for security, and all the content pages went black except for the Library tab. I still see the brownish user interface with the menus and tabs, but the rest is blank. I restarted completely several times, I even went so far as to do a fresh reinstall of the client (by deleting everything except Steam.exe and the Steamapps folder) and still the same problem. The Steam website still seems fine though. It's how I'm posting this. :teardrops:

I think the problem is your antivirus blocking steamwebhelper.exe from running more than one time. Gin was right when he wrote that it needs 3 instances running in the processes (that you can see in Task manager). My advice would be to make sure the Steam client is off, then temporarily disable your antivirus, start up the Steam client, wait a little and see if the pages load. Reenable the antivirus as soon as you've done your testing.

Just disabling the antivirus might not work. You might have to uninstall your current antivirus and install another one. That's what I did. I went from Bitdefender to Avast (both free versions)

All I know is it isn't my firewall, and that steamwebhelper.exe ain't doing anything. It's running, but not active and I have no active network connection with it when I look at my network activity when there should be. So all I can surmise is that their is something up with the process.

For me, it wasn't the firewall (Comodo), it was the antivirus (BitDefender) causing issues. I should point out that I have a firewall program separate from my antivirus program. I suppose most people will have their firewall and antivirus in the same program.

If there aren't three different lines with Steamwebhelper.exe in the Processes tab of your task manager, then you have a problem and it's likely caused by your antivirus or firewall or whatever blocking it. When my Steam client wasn't working, there was only one steamwebhelper line in the processes intead of three.

I am in the same boat, only library will load. This issue only arose after the recent steam update. I do not have an anti-virus, and turned off windows firewall. Currently running windows 7 Home Premium. I have tried flushing DNS, the steam://flushconfig, and reinstalling steam. Do not really wanna delete registry files. I wish steam would put in a word on this issue, seems to be quite a few people with this issue since the recent update

*Forgot to add, if i switch to Big picture mode in my client everything loads fine, only when its in desktop mode nothing works.

Uninstalling Bitdefender (free 2015 or whatever) worked for me. Simply disabling it temporarily was one of the first things I tried (along with firewall) and didn't work... so just uninstall it if you're using and still having issues. Needed an excuse to drop that crap anyways.

Thanks folks!

[clarification] I was using Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition. Exiting the program (and checking processes to make sure it was killed) didn't work. Killing the service and rebooting might have worked but didn't try. Uninstalling it worked. Replaced with Avast Free AV and working fine.

Nice that fix it for you guys, but I'm pretty much f'd until the next update. I knew it wasn't my AV or FW since it worked fined with them until the last update. Still, I went through the BS of uninstalling all of it, and voila, Steam is still a piece of crap. I wish I could roll back Steam to the previous version.

Sorry that it's still not working for you, BoLo1881. You can't assume that it wasn't your AV or FW, because until the last update, everything worked fine for me too.

For other people who had the problem, it would be interesting to know if uninstalling or disabling your Antivirus and/or Firewall fixed things for you.

If anyone is still out of luck and you are using Bitdefender antivirus, then disable Active Threat Control and re-launch Steam. Then you can turn Active Threat Control back on again.

Active Threat Control is one of the Antivirus options.

Currently, I have to do this each time I launch Steam.

Do you have that option with the free edition, Ploppo?

To be honest, I don't know. I have the 2016 AV package.

Hi guys I had the same issue (black screens except for library, big picture working normal etc) In my case the issue was FW (online armor free edition). After reading this post I've realized that since last steam client update the program steamwebhelpe.exe was flagged as untrusted. I've changed it to trusted and it solve the problem. Hope this help.
