Is this correct? If you have DS4Windows for example, they can't be used at the same time along with Steam controller support. Either use DS4Windows and disable the controller support for Playstation AND xbox if you're using 3th party drivers from within Big Picture. If you don't have any 3th party drivers, enable Playstation support as described in the link below.
DS4Windows emulates as a 360 controller, while Steam supports PS4 controllers out of the box without any drivers. They do need to be enabled in BP controller settings.

If you play games outside of steam, it's better to disable Steam's controller support and just use the 3th party driver. Or uninstall the 3th party driver and enable steam's controller support. You can't really use both at the same time without causing problems. You can also totally get rid of the 3th party drivers and add the games as a NON-steam game that are not running on steam, so you can still use Steam's controller support. Your choice.
You can check the controller settings by starting big picture and check the controller configuration from there.
sorry im kinda new to pc gaming and im still trying to get the hang of all this, should i try installing a 3rd party driver?
-Start Big Picture (Top right Icon inside steam)
-Go to controller settings (You can navigate with mouse and keyboard)
-Enable Playstation support and other controllers you might have.
-Play the game from within Big Picture
-Optional : reconnect the controller and press the Home Button. It should start Big picture if you're not running it currently. Play the game.
If you want to play games from outside of steam, add it as a NON-steam game and run it from within big picture.
In my early experience with Steam controller support, it only worked from within Big picture or from starting within the library.
