Ps4 controller bug?
Okay so I've been having this problem with every game I buy, but eso is the first that I can't do anything about it.. I've tried a usb connection and a bluetooth connection and I've messed with all the controller settings but nothing works 😔

So the issue in having is that my ps4 controller works on steams big picture mode, and it works with any of my games that I launch outside of steam, but when I launch a game in steam none of my controls work unless im holding down the home button? I've looked for similar issues but cant find anything and I've tried getting help from support(to no avail) and honestly I'm ready to give up on steam bc of this. I've tried 4 other games and controls work perfectly until I launch the game from steam, and I think that's why eso isn't working is bc it automatically boots through steam

Please if anybody has a suggestion I'm all ears

You say the controller works with games outside of steam, so that means you have 3th party drivers installed ? Like DS4WIndows or SCP drivers?

Is this correct? If you have DS4Windows for example, they can't be used at the same time along with Steam controller support. Either use DS4Windows and disable the controller support for Playstation AND xbox if you're using 3th party drivers from within Big Picture. If you don't have any 3th party drivers, enable Playstation support as described in the link below.

DS4Windows emulates as a 360 controller, while Steam supports PS4 controllers out of the box without any drivers. They do need to be enabled in BP controller settings.

If you play games outside of steam, it's better to disable Steam's controller support and just use the 3th party driver. Or uninstall the 3th party driver and enable steam's controller support. You can't really use both at the same time without causing problems. You can also totally get rid of the 3th party drivers and add the games as a NON-steam game that are not running on steam, so you can still use Steam's controller support. Your choice.

You can check the controller settings by starting big picture and check the controller configuration from there.

As sm0 states, Steam works out of the box with the DS4 controller. I have set up mine through BP mode years ago, then disabled BP mode so it doesn't launch when I plug in my controller. Never had an issue.

i don't have any 3rd party drivers installed, but if i use a desktop shortcut to open a game, i dont get a notification that my controller connected from steam like when i launch from steam. my issue isn't with the controller connecting though, its that its connected but only works in-game if im holding down home, and even then it's not the game controls or the steam overlay controls
sorry im kinda new to pc gaming and im still trying to get the hang of all this, should i try installing a 3rd party driver?

-Open Steam
-Start Big Picture (Top right Icon inside steam)
-Go to controller settings (You can navigate with mouse and keyboard)
-Enable Playstation support and other controllers you might have.
-Play the game from within Big Picture

-Optional : reconnect the controller and press the Home Button. It should start Big picture if you're not running it currently. Play the game.

If you want to play games from outside of steam, add it as a NON-steam game and run it from within big picture.

In my early experience with Steam controller support, it only worked from within Big picture or from starting within the library.
