When I connect my ps4 controller to my PC, all audio cuts out.
So I am connecting my controller directly to my pc with a usb extension cord and a usb to usb c cable. The moment I stick the usb into the extension cord, all audio cuts out, but it still is "playing". The controller I am using is not a regular ps4 duelshock controller. I have had no issues so far with this controller and I cannot compare this incident to any others because this is the first time I've tried to play on my pc with a controller. I don't know much about technology, so you may have to REALLY dumb things down for me.

Didn't they put small loudspeakers in the thing? Your system might recognise the controller as an audio device and try to use it. Have a look at the device manager.
yes DS4 has built-in audio
switch audio device to speakers
Mhm that was the issue. How can I make it so the audio device doesn't switch?

AFTER it switched, you open your audio device settings and change back. Windows will remember the default device for this specific configuration.
Thank you. This fixed my issues.
be aware that using another usb port will have it recognize as a new device and switch sound device around again (in case you pull the extension out for whatever reason)

usually I just deactivate all other audio devices both in playback and recording (legacy sound settings) that I don't want to use so no game or app can default to something odd

You can also disable it in sound settings. Had a similar issue with my gamesir controller as it has a port to plug in headphones and was recognizing that.
