Store videos (game trailers) not playing
Good day.

Not sure exactly when this started as a problem, but I discovered it only recently (AFAIK it was working at least a month ago; no changes in hardware in that time).

Using the Steam client, when I open the store page for a particular product, the video will not play. No audio, no video. It will briefly show the splash screen in low res, with a video length of 0:00/0:00. Then it will go black. The static images (beside the video) show.

Using Chrome, when I open the store page for a particular product, there are no problems.

It doesn't matter what game it is, the videos are not showing in the Steam client.

I have updated my video drivers.
I have turned off Steam > Settings > Interface > Enable smooth scrolling / Enable GPU accelerated rendering / Enable hardware video decoding
I have deleted the Steam/appcache
I have cleared the Steam download cache (Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache)
I have checked for Steam updates (Steam > Check for Steam Client Updates) (none)
I have checked for Windows updates (none)
I have downloaded a new version of Steam and installed it over the existing install
I have deleted the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam folder and reinstalled it
I have restarted my computer after each of the major steps (like updating drivers, deleting caches, etc.)

And yet the problem persists.

Videos in the Community tab play alright (steamcommunity.com) through the Steam client.
I have plenty of space left on my hard drives (including C:) (several GB's at least)

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I'm not so sure, what wrong here with this picture of the things you say, first of all all nvidia user almost get GPU driver updatE every week atleast.
even windows do update. every week

so how come your video codec aient plasying now.

you tell alot with what you did, but aient you forgetting we cant see your pc spec here.

you do know steam do have system information right ?.

and we are still not support here, here you have video issue that is still seen as GPU driver issue and its codec with it.

I just updated to the latest nvidia drivers and now all videos refuse to play. Something changed in the driver - steam codec pathway for sure. I'm sure it will get fixed at some point.

For the record, I am also experiencing the exact same issue as reported by the OP. It seems unlikely to be related to the video driver since the video plays fine when viewing through the web client using Chrome. It is only when viewing the video in the steam client that the video does not play. This is almost certainly a bug/regression with the steam client, not a PC configuration issue.

Just came here to say exactly the same thing. All videos just black screen for me!

Try role back to previous driver, this mean DL past drivers.
or look at C-drev nvida Folder if they are there.

Do a manual search at Nvidia page, then use More version under newest driver.

ps.
Do note we have also seen windos get update and you need to reinstall same Nvidia driver again to fix windows with it

i use custom install and make a clean install the check box is there. ( reason to make sure old user setting is not the problem. )

I'm having the same issue. I have not updated anything on the computer. IE, windows update, driver updates, this week and it only started yesterday. I've tried enabling and disabling all available settings, rolling to steam beta branch, clearing download cache, clearing browser cache, restarting PC, and ritual sacrifice. Nothing has helped. Steam videos play fine in regular browser.

It has nothing to do with drivers, the issue began last night when the service came back online after their usual Tuesday maintenance push.

Trailer doesn't play even in my favorite web browser. The trailer played successfully in other web browsers. My favorite web browser is the one that updates infrequently, so if that's the cause, it makes sense.
