Failed to initialize player - solved
Many of the games on my older Linux laptop quit running because of a DirectX 11 error.

I put copies of some of my smaller games (about 60 games) on my Intel I7 laptop with Iris 5200 integrated graphics to play them away from my high end Linux sim racing rig. These games ran fine when installed on the laptop, but recently these games fail (about 40) with this message:

Failed to initialize player
Failed to initialize graphics
Make sure you have DirectX 11 installed ...

I added this line to the Launch Options of the game properties to get all of them running again:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%

Hope this helps anyone else with this error. This may be a problem with the Intel IRIS integrated graphics, Intel states that the IRIS doesn't support all DirectX 11 instructions.

Seem we have to teach you how to use steam, search or a google search. so you can learn how to do better as Linux users. ( just wait to you figure it out, and this was actual not being rude, but you need a push in right directions ) because if you cant lookup stuff as linux users, then you dont belong in or on Linux, pretty sure Linux users or experience linux users will agree on things here, to find own OS usres and its knowledge is require for best help to whatever system we might have.

ps.
I dont go to the bakery and complain over my car, its same here diffrent OS.
and we are not allowed to be rude at steam, but in this case , do it yourself. ( this is know as tough love ) and ment you need to learn do this yourself.

we are not holding ppl hand with simple task anymore.

gl with it.

ps.
steam has 1 billion account, pretty sure, many will agree on this. ppl need to be better at search.

I see you're being criticised for not using google to find the linux discussion section. Personally I'd criticise Valve for making it harder to find than it needs to be.

If you still need to know where it is it's here

I gave Iceira an opportunity to be helpful and give a tip to a useful Linux group as most of them are noise and none of them addressed this DirectX11 issue that may also affect Windows users.

Proton enables Linux users to access Windows-exclusive software

This is the problem Linux user and steam own rules for allowed it. ( imb goto your own os forum with linux issue. where you belong )

According to steam own rules Emulators not allowed. ( so technicaly steam should shut down all proton related windows app run at linux )

This is not the first time linux emulatd widnows go wrong or buggy.

ps.
if you dont know this, there is alot of emulator rdy to jump in at windows platform, and steam actual has a issue.with alot of gamers that now can coimplain over things not working if alllowed, then user might have alot of emulator settings issue..

Iceira you are such a tremendous ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it's absolutely incredible. That you have the confidence to prattle about "learning to google" when you can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ even read algo's post is absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ astonishing.

Genuinely, unironically, please never post again.

Also, Algo, I appreciate the tip.

This error of running DX11 games on Intel Haswell integrated graphics is not a Linux problem as Windows will have the same issue. Microsoft provides instructions to install Windows 10 or 11 on Haswell as the default Windows installation fails and encourages users to buy a new computer. There is a solution to running DX11 games on Haswell that is also available to Windows users.

There are no Windows exclusive games on Steam. Valve intends for all Steam listed games to run on SteamOS, a distribution of Linux. Any game listed as “Runs on Steam Deck” has given explicit permission to run on Linux. You will not find a EULA on Steam that restricts a game to the Windows operating system.

Proton is not Windows emulation. Proton and WINE are compatibly layers that send the published Windows system calls to the Linux system handling the hardware. Just as AMD and Nvidia graphics cards have a compatibly layer in their drivers that sends the DX11 calls to their internal systems. Proton is developed by Valve to improve game performance of the WINE compatibly layer. In fact WINE is an acronym for “WINE Is Not Emulation”.

If you have this DX11 problem on your Windows computer with a Haswell processor you can solve it by getting Ubuntu Linux from the Microsoft store. You can find articles on how to install the Linux Steam client on Windows with a Google search. All Windows users may find improved frame rates using the Linux Steam client on Windows.

Please don’t discriminate Linux users on the Help and Tips forum as discrimination is a violation of Steam’s Online Conduct rules.
