Slow patching after download
So myself and a friend play Baldurs gate 3. We downloaded update 7 at the same time last night and we finished the download at roughly the same time but while his update finiahed almost right away, I was "patching" for like 25-30 minutes. It was giving me a write speed of about 50mb/s.

My PC is C, D and E drive. C and D are SSDs and E is a mechanical drive I use for storage only. Note I did install several steam games on it in the past that have been uninstalled so there was a Steamlibrary folder and an association to the E drive in the steam settings under storage.

BG3 was installed on the D drive but was downloading the update to the E drive (mechanical drive) and using this to update the game on the D drive, hence the slower patching speed.

I deleted the Steamlibrary folder from E and removed the association under storage in settings so I'm hoping this doesn't happen again.

Is that all I should need to do? I don't want steam using the E drive in any way, shape or form.

Aient you forgeting to explan free room on disk, and as fare as i know you do get choise first time where to install at what drev if there is enough free room. this is default, i have seen post with ppl that edit steam library files , but thats a own edit. and can give drev and letter assignment issue later.

and i have only seen steam change default drev if disk space is used.

and BG3 is still seen as 150gb game ( multiplyes by 3 to have enough free room for full patch.

technicaly steam should stop DL and say not enough free room on installations disk, and we dont need to explan HDD and vs SSD here. ( on boot disk with windows even more space is require.

A solid-state drive (SSD) is required to play Baldur’s Gate 3, and we recommend you install the game on yours. It’s good practice to make sure you have more space on the drive than is needed.

and they dont say how much gl with old ways 3 to 5 times more space as we did in the zip-archive days.

The drive had 200gb free space available at the time of the issue. Would it need more then that to patch?

Could be , we have no clue on other temporay files + OS and antivirus app scan while and viatual ram on disk, so many thing can cause this, steam is not going to explan you need work space.

and sit and tell you delete files and clean up temoporay files in the system to free a few GB if you get that lucky ( other gamers talk in TB free ) on big disk ( again i assume its low disk space as you already figure out, problem is what is enough free space. )

do check steam storage manament and look for golden STAR and what is default steam installer rest is more a choise you get then install a other game and see you do get option on what drev as long free room is there and disk has steam lib stuckture in the storage manament.

gl with it.
