When invisible in "friends" is there a way to remain visible to a list of selected friends on a whitelist ?
Like the title says,

I want the friend I'm actually playing with to see me online, to be able to right click my name and join.

But I don't want the rest of the people on my friends list to see whether I'm online or not

They are your friends or not... just delete those you do not want to be friends with, "selected" friends, if I were your friend, I would delete and block you. I hope your "other " friends wont find this post.
But neigh, that is not possible.

Well, I think my friend doesn't want to get robbed by accidentally disclosing when he is and isn't home. So he's always invisible and only goes "online" for a few seconds for me to click on him and join. He'd be ok with me being able to see when he is and isn't online, but not -everyone- on his list.

I mean, steam friends are like facebook friends, they're gaming acquaintances, not actually friends.

That is pure paranoia, anyway, you can use or communicate via Skype or Discord if you want to avoid going online for whatever reason.

I'm confused, does this mean you're willfully friends with scammers?

We use steam for co-op matchmaking and presence notification (let each other know we're at our computer and when we're gaming). Well, we would use it that way if he wasn't always invisible.

We don't use steam for voice chat, text chat works no problem while invisible

He has already been robbed (before steam was a thing) so that's probably why.

Still many IM client have an option to be invisible but also whitelist some users I just thought this is a missing feature for the people who use invisible mode.

Scammers and thieves do not tell you they are scammers and thieves
They just gain your trust then rob you.
There is no way to know which steam internet strangers are robbers and which are not
All you can tell if they play games or not.

Yes, as far as trustworthiness, it is worse, many strangers and lesser known persons than on facebook

You are on Steam for 17 years OP, you should know better. Instead of talking for your friend, let him come to the forums.

His account is as old as mine, he has post zero comments. I'm the one annoyed that he's always offline. From his point of view, I'm always online and he can see what I'm playing and has no difficulty to join. So he doesn't have much of a reason to come asking anything on here.
