steam trying to modify system wide network settings
it's never tried to gain root access before, why would it need to now? why won't it stop asking? why would i allow any application make network changes without specifying exactly what it wants, someone would be a true idiot to just let an app change whatever the hell it wants, does valve consider us all to be idiots or is this some kind of bug? since it installs everything PER USER, why would it need root access? for anything?

Could you be specific about when you see this happening?

How do you know it's happening?

What did you try to use, on steam - is it a game, program, or the client itself?

Since I haven't had to reinstall or move my Steam install I cannot say that it doesn't do this on a first-time install, but ? Without knowing exactly what you're doing, what you see *precisely* when this happens, and why it's steam and not, say, a virus pretending to be steam, I dunno?

Well that's your first mistake. Steam does not install per user.

ok, to clarify, the ORIGINAL installation installs for the whole system, UPDATES and games install per user, THEN they run, happy?

Pretty sure you'd be better off asking in a forum better suited for your Operating System? It sure doesn't sound like windows and there are a couple of places that may be better for this question...

Also are you on a network or a shared computer? Like Silicon suggests this doesn't sound like a windows thing, and definitely doesn't sound like a single-user computer to me, but I could be wrong.

so, this particular forum is only for windows users? dear me... i didn't see the notice that it was windows only. as to it being multi user, pretty much any linux version that can run a desktop version of steam, is multi-user, even android has multi-user functionality now. for BASIC security, even windows should be set up multi-user, lot of malware gets nowhere if it's on a restricted account, that's been basic functionality in windows since the 90's, even 3.11 did it.

how about, if it's making random weird changes in windows systems too, but few are noticing it cause they're running as admin all the time, good way to get your system wracked, enjoy.

a virus pretending to be steam, that only started the behaviour after an update initiated by the previous install, rather odd thing for it to be doing, unless it was intentional.

Windows is the most wide spread OS thus generic boards will almost automatically lead to what you see in responses, people saying that it doesn't sound like a Windows OS. Try a board specific to your OS.
jamesskaar Dec 15, 2021 @ 5:56pm
there is NO board dedicated to linux, the 'operating systems' board has a lot to do with hardware, nothing to do with client problems. isn't steam written in electron now? that's os agnostic.

Nobody said that... wow, defensive much?

I just thought you would get better answers from a forum with experience with your OS.
jamesskaar Dec 15, 2021 @ 6:02pm
which forum would that be? specifically. it's hardly defensive when someone marches in and says 'go away, be with your own weird people'. a problem with the app that's bugged me a while is there's some kind bug that randomly relocates the cursor in text entry areas, that could make a person edgy, sorry if i've fluffed your feathers because of my frustration, but that is irrelevant.

all indications point to THIS being the place to bring the stated issue, not somewhere else, this is the place.

try clicking the link, maybe? And you can lose the attitude any time. You are on the verge of offensive.

Wow dude.

Yeah in the future remember that a vast huge majority of all computer users encounter only Windows, then Mac, and a very, very distant Linux in third at all.

If you led with that we would have been able to point you in the right direction first off. Try leading with that in the future when you're attempting to troubleshoot. don't bring a radio to a car dealer and expect them to know how to fix it.

Yes, since it's the majority OS on steam.

There's sections dedicated to Steam for Mac, and Steam for Linux.

Well most people don't read the sections that exist, soooo.....

It doesnt make "random weird changes", it only does what it's authorized to or needs to do. That sit. It doesn't do anything else. The rest is just paranoia.

No. There are many common questions that are perfectly fine right here, including this one,

It would get a better response in a more suitable forum, that’s all.
