SOLVED: Unable to launch games on Steam
Hi, so I am not sure what happened, but all of the sudden I can not launch games from Steam that are installed on a certain HD. I tested out to see if Rockstar Luancher and Battle.net games would launch games off that HD and they do.

I am not sure what changed. They were launching and now they are not. It is only that one particular HD. Things I have tried is verifying the game files, reinstalling the games, checking disc permissions, fragmenting the disc, and using CC Cleaner to clean the registry.

Solution: It was Windows update KB5045594, uninstalling that fixed all my problems.

Can you launch a steam game, no thirdpart app launcher.
HikariLight 28 OCT 2024 a las 12:23
If a game has a separate launcher besides Steam you CANNOT skip that.
You need to launch the launcher at least to get the game to play.

It look like a security issue, thirdpart app issue, how this happend i dont know, OP seem could do that in the past as fare as i understand it.

Try Portal2, and steam game with no external launcher app.

Try Portal2, and steam game with no external launcher app.
That one made it to the Valve logo and then shut down saying engine error it requires Steam to run. I opened it in Steam and that one did start.

Games defiantly not working are Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Persona 3, and Fires of Rubicon.
They just start go black, you see the mouse cursor and then it closes.

Try Portal2, and steam game with no external launcher app.
OP is trying to skip the whole authentication system and the game assumes they are using a bad copy.
Games with a separate launcher MUST have that launcher run or the game will not launch.

No you don't understand. I'm using Steam. The games are on Steam. In .y original post I said I TESTED games on other platforms to see if they did it too such as Rockstar and those games launched.

Do you perchance have games from other Clients outside of Steam installed in the same folder as your Steam games? This will cause permission issues. You need to install the Steam library in its own folder in the root of the drive. Other Non-steam games/services can coexist in the same drive provided they are separated in their own folders.

No nothing outside of steam related files in the steam library/steam apps/ and so forth.

So you don't have the SteamLibrary folder in another folder shared with other clients or games? The Steam library directory is something like "X:\SteamLibrary\Steamapps..." where X is the specific drive? And just for clarification, you are saying that Steam games with 3rd party launchers that are installed in drive X work as they should? Is it the Steam games installed in drive X that don't require other launchers that are not working?

And is steam running first, before you start the game if you evern use windows shortcut, we other start games from inside client.

If steam start to slow, and games run to soon then, that's why, also part of the @HikariLight point out, steam is not a spring chiken anymore, this is old news , steam client most run in taskmanager before start shortcut today, or you will get the steam is not running and games startup issue.

ps.
steam is not as fast as it once was, you can also say to many add user request and steam is a heavy, and it has a cost, steam not strat up before game try startup.

and we are back at steam is a online client.( to many check this and that has a cost. )

It goes Program Files > Battle.net, Epic, Modifiable Windows Apps, Rockstar, SteamLibrary

SteamLibrary > SteamApps, libraryfolder.vdf, steam.dll

SteamApps > common, depotcache, downloading, shadercache, temp, workshop, appmanifest

common > Amid Evil, Armored Core VI, Back 4 Blood, Borderlands 2, Cyberpunk 2077, DARK SOULS III, Deep Rock Galactic, Destiny 2, Devil May Cry 5, Dying Light 2, GUILTY GEAR Xrd, killingfloor 2, Last Epoch, LikeADragon8, Lost Ark, Mad Max, MechaBREAK Playstest, METAPHOR, Once Human, ONE PIECE WORLD SEEKER, Path of Exile, Portal 2, Quake 2, RESIDENT EVIL 2, RESIDENT EVIL 4, Saints Row, SS2, StreetFighterV, The Finals, The Thaumaturge, Throne and Liberty, Ultimate Doom, Warframe

The thing is, this just started happening. I have had this folder structure for awhile. The only thing I can think of is I ran malwarebyte the other day and I deleted 1 file. I don't remember what it was it just said it was malware on the scan.

It was suggested that I open Portal 2 through the folder earlier. I installed it. I had Steam running. Navigated to the folder and clicked on the executable. It started it went to the Valve start up logo then quit and gave Steam error. THen I launched it from within Steam and it launched. This was on the HD I am having issues with other games working. One for certain that is not working is Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth.

If you have not done so, go into Steam > Settings > Storage and select the problem drive. Then Click the three dots and "Repair Library."
