External SSD spike then dies
So I have a Phillips external SSD and I want to use it for a rather large game, roughly 110gb. While the download takes about 2 hours, the verifying files afterwards is absolutely buggy. It’s completely controlled by the “disk usage”, spikes at just a second and then gradually drops following half a minute, in the end verifying about 4% of the files. Then afterwards, it’s just dead for 15-30 minutes before repeating the process. It doesn’t crash or anything. I use a Mac too. Any logical solutions connected to it?

Check the disk cache. Your MacOS may very well not use cache for external drives. So check if cache for that external drive is disabled and if yes, enable it.
