Playing WITHOUT Steam?

I am more than certain Empire: Total War can run on my system. Unfortunately, it is slightly laggy, and I am pretty sure this is because Steam is running in the background.

How can I make my computer focus entirely on the game - nothing else? I don't want Steam to be running at all. I want the PC to focus completely on Empire: Total War.

How do I disable the In-Game Community? All I see is the Steam Overlay option, and I do not think that is it. I don't see any option in the In-Game settings to disable the community.

How do I run Steam in minimal mode? A quick Google search netted no satisfactory results.

close all windoes.

put steam in ofline mode and it it exactly retail.

System specs are pretty low I would reckon. I got 4 GB's of RAM, but that's about all I can tell you. I usually use "Can You Run It" to see system specs. This was the results for Empire: Total War:

It has a green check mark beside everything, but I know that's not always the Decider of these sorts of things. I can run Rome and Medieval II near perfectly, and Age of Empires III runs better than it EVER did, so perhaps I am a smidge below what I need to have.

@Spawk: lol, I know. I don't play to many games on the PC cause I prefer console, but I do like strategy games and the Total War games are something I've always liked. Rome's always ran fine, and Medieval II was terrible, but I upgraded and then Medieval II worked fine, but not Empire. I've upgraded again, and Empire runs but it's not necessarily the best, but it runs.

I ain't got a lot of money, but the flea markets sell broken computers that I can buy for about 5 bucks and scavenge the 'good stuff' out of them. The PC I have now, with those specs up above, I got about ~$15 in all of it.

One man's trash is another man's treasure, eh? Hopefully I'll run across a better computer one day. Or maybe I can one day afford one.

It just sucks that I spent $20 on the game. But that's a mistake I made.
