Windows rewriting Drivers
Okay this happened to me and I got the Blue error screen and was locked out after I did the fix for the blue screen it took me some time to realise the problem so I thought it would help someone and save them the hassle if I posted it.
Because I couldn't access my steam for over a week I thought it was a steam issue so I deleted steam and re-installed (warning steam will uninstall your games so make back ups)
Also do this first before uninstalling, because most likely it's windows replacing your display adapters.

1. Open device manager and go to display adapters and chose and different driver
2. Download a updated version for your driver from the manufacturer
3. Install it and poof your back on steam and if you did a uninstall of steam then your like me kicking your self in the butt :/

:steamthis:

Also I would like to thank Steam Support for all their patients and support trying to help me fix my issues even though I had to find the solution myself, I never would have without their support.
So thank you everyone at Steam Support.

Windows dont fix other Brands product driver issue. they are given to them by Product support.
so whatever issue is take it up with Product suppot, you had a issue with.

Display adapters that Mean GPU you tell us here how MS can do a Nvidia or AMD or Intel Driver, they cant. ( they cant even change 1 bit on a released driver. ( its not a MS issue at all, )

All MS try to do is signed the driver as not crash windows core ( they try avoid that, rest is not a MS issue if button even works or driver work at all )

so gl try point at a windows issue then there is none, all this crap is your own Brand product support own problem.

ps.
and yeah says alot about steam try to help you then they are not responsible for it.
any issue with display adapters take it up with GPU card support, you can tell steam support this also.

OP assuming you want to fully disable driver updates from windows, disable windows from updating drivers in settings and/or set it up in a group policy, you can google either for "instructions", this means you need to manually update all your drivers.

or, im pretty sure you can set it to ignore the gpu driver only, but update the rest and leave you the gpu driver to update yourself, again you can google to see how.

with that said, windows update tends to hand out generic drivers and incorrect ones gpu wise, so i suggest manually or use a driver program like driver booster while also still getting your own gpu driver.

you didn't mention what OS you are using, im going to assume win 10, as its a common complaint for that OS.

edit: thanks for the points

First Blue error screen came after an update everything worked FINE
Second Windows used a generic version of my GPU one that keep me from logging on to steam
Third Windows did this without my knowledge
Fourth I fixed the problem by downloading a updated Driver that I couldn't when I was using the generic one Winduhhhs assigned to my GPU
So yeah I am pointing at Windows cause it was their update that caused the whole issue.
Plus we understand your a windows fan we get it but that doesn't make it a perfect OP system.
Thanks for the snide remakes you have a nice day.:steambored:
