New to Steam Deck - any tips?
Any settings I should change, things I should do, etc? This is my first time owning a Steam Deck (and using Steam in general).

Something went wrong while displaying this content. Refresh

Don't overthink it. I repeat, do not. Overthink. It.

There's people thinking that you totally need accessory X or plugin Y. Don't. Just don't. Some of these are useful, yes, there's absolutely no musth-haves, though, there's only "it serves a use case I have".

With that out of the way, 4 important things

1. Don't rush through the first-time-usage-tutorial. There's some neat stuff there people miss because they want to.
2. Take a walk through the settings menu & quick-access menu. There's a ton of neat stuff there people miss because they want to.
3. Play Aperture Desk Job. It's a great input test as well as a fun way to spend half an hour with your Deck.
4. Protondb is your friend. Chek it out.

Thanks for the tips.

I just went to the ProtonDB website - is it mostly a verification database? Is Proton itself something that needs to be installed on the Deck?

No. Hell no. If we had to manually install Proton on the Deck, it would be hella lot less usable.

It's built-in. See, that's what I meant by "don't overthink" :p

Ha, well there you go. Shows you how much I have to learn. Or not learn.

Start by using that thing. Just log in, download a game, play a game. Don't start by taking lectures, start by having fun. It's by far the easiest aproach :) You can't break anything unless you try REALLY hard (so going into PC mode, unlock administrative access which isn't easy in of itself and then delete system files) and even then would you be able to recover it.

To non-dangerous things anyway. I would prefer you to learn to disarm bombs before actually trying.
