Does anyone know how to get Proof of Purchase without the orange box?
(I have all the games from the collection, but paying money just for a hat is somehow... stupid)

I don't quite understand what you are asking. If you are referring to the Valve game collection "The Orange Box" then you actually don't seem to have all the games in the collection. "The Orange Box" has the following games:

• Half-Life 2
  
• Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
  
• Half-Life 2: Episode One
  
• Half-Life 2: Epuisode Two
  
• Portal
  
• Team Fortress 2

You are apparently missing the Half-Life 2 games (which have recently been consolidated into one game), and Team Fortress 2. See:

No, I have all the games from the orange box, they were just bought separately in different places

Well, it says “This item was initially given to players who purchased Team Fortress 2 before the Uber Update on June 23, 2011, but can still be obtained by receiving a gift of the game, or by activating a retail copy of the game — such as purchasing The Orange Box."

If you have all the games in the Orange Box already, you can't.

So "The Proof of Purchase" item was a way of thanking purchasers of TF2 before it became F2P. Therefore obtaining that game free after the 2011 date would not entitle one to receive the item. However, purchasing The Orange Box would qualify since the purchaser or gifter has paid for the game. In other words obtaining all the games in the set was never a criteria for obtaining the item. It just so happens that the only way to purchase TF2 after that date is through purchasing The Orange Box.
