How can I restore from backup files?
I'm a Civ-5 player, who saw my install go crazy when trying to paint a new game screen. Once recovered with a reinstall, I had to set up each game option (from memory) on Interface, Video, Sound option tabs. So I want to use Steam backup/restore. I used the steam Library::Game::Manage::Backup_Game_Files that create several large .csd and associated .csm file in a folder. I was hoping to use these to restore all my Civilization options in the future. But I don't see any option for "Restore from Backup" in Steam nor in Civ-5. How would i restore from this folder of CSD files?

I notice they are some 3-gigabytes of data. What is in this backup?

Steam backup and restore is only for the game program--not for settings or game saves. The backup files are used to restore the game without having to download it again for example if you had uninstalled the game previously. You can also use the backup files to transfer the game to another computer. For games that support the Steam Cloud, and when working properly, settings and game saves can be automatically uploaded to the Steam Cloud. The data is then automatically restored to your computer as needed. Steam Cloud features are optional--what data are uploaded is determined by the game maker. It would seem that Civ-5 is uploading game saves but possibly not the settings--those you may need to write down or manually backup. I believe for Windows at least the settings/config files are "UserSettings.ini," "GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini," and "config.ini" and are located in "%userprofile%\Documents\MyGames\Sid Meier's Civilization 5." Users in the Civ-5 game discussion section will know more about this.
