Steam game recording clip stutters after exporting
I just tried Steam game recording for the 1st time. When watching the recording in Steam it was running flawlessly. I then exported a clip from the recording at 60 FPS and this clip feels very stuttery. I checked the frame times and they are all over the place. They should be a constant 16.66 ms, but they vary wildly. Does anyone else have that problem? The original recording should have been 60 fps, too. At least that's what's configured in the recording settings. So there should not be any problem with frame times while exporting a clip at the same frame rate.

Does anyone else have this problem?

When you say that you exported it, what do you mean exactly?

I tried running a playback on the actual .m4s files and everything works (A&V) except my own mic, which stutters to the point where you can only hear 50% of what I'm saying. But the in-game sounds, the others talking in disc, background music from youtube - all that works.

When you view the recording in Steam there is any option to "share" and there you can export the clip as a video file. That's what I did. Highest quality, HEVC (also tried H264), 60 FPS.

I tried to use those files directly somehow, but did not know how to (I have no experience in video production). What did you use to play them?

Thanks, I did not know there's a sub forum for that.

You can run the .mpd manifest file in VLC, that will make it so you can watch the actual raw-data .m4s files. See if there's a difference, then work from there.

Though your method is better if you want to keep the file sizes more reasonable.

Thanks, that's interesting.

This reddit post explains how to build a normal .mp4 file from the .mpd and .m4s files: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeckTricks/comments/1dpj1zv/game_recording_how_it_works_and_how_you_can_get/

Regarding the initial topic of this thread: I did another recording, this time limiting the frame rate ingame to 60 FPS (also setting the same resolution as the recording) and the exported clip does not stutter.
