Steam and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ windows permissions
I've copied two game directories from Linux to windoze (about 300GB). However, Steam can't write into those directories under mentioned operating system parody called windows. I gave these directories all of the possible permissions. Even more than newly created by Steam game directories have. I gave myself the ownership, but that's not enough! The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of crap called windows must have some hiddent permissions or it's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buggy mess. I don't want to dowload 300GB of data just because microsoft is such kind of joke. I don't even try to write to their 'support', because it's parody on its own. Every help will be appreciated.

Have you tried "Steam Local Network Game Transfer?" I think it should work for copying games that are compatible with both operating systems. If game files are not compatible, then Steam will have to download files anyway. See:

As far as I understand, and maybe I'm wrong, steam games from linux are not compatible with Windows because they are powered by that proton. You'll need to download the game on Windows through the Steam app for Windows.

Well, that's not the case here. The game data is the same (in the worst scenario it would just download data that is different). The problem is the Steam client can't write into mentioned folders. I've even reset permissions via cmd and icacls command, but it didn't help.

Thanks, I'll take a look. However, will it work on a single PC? I can't launch both OS'es at once. ;)

No, both computers need to be online and logged in to Steam simultaneously. Sorry, I assumed separate computers.

I don't know if this will work but it might be worth a try. I am going to assume you are dual booting:
  1. Start Windows up and reinstall Steam from scratch.
  2. Login and make sure things are working properly and then exit Steam.
  3. Copy game files for one game (preferably those of a game made by Valve) over to the appropriate location in the Windows Steam folder. The default location should be:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common
  4. Now start Steam. Look for the game in your Steam Library. It will appear as not being installed. This is as expected.
  5. Now attempt to install the game. Steam should recognize the game files you copied over and keep downloading to a minimum. If this works then you will notice that the installation will take much less time than if you were installilng from scratch.

Unfortunate is that you do not in fact mention said folders (explicitly): it might be Windows Defender's "Controlled folder access":

No, such defender function is disabled, I think (user security level put down to minimum). Furthermore, I have access to this directories. Only Steam can't write to them.

That's exactly what I did, but unfortunately it didn't work. I also tried moving Steam to different location, because I thought Program Files are the problem. I think it's just bug in windows. It cannot be explained otherwise. In the past I was doing the opposite: copied game directory from Windows to Linux and everything worked perfectly. Thanks all of you for replies. I already gave up, but there's something more.. I left PC for the night to make it download the game, but guess what? Windows has restarted few minutes after I went to sleep! I upgraded it because I was predicting something like this may happen, but no it had to found the reason to restart. Three days wasted, but I'll make it. P.S. I wouldn't be running Windows at all, but I was forced to install it back, because two games stopped working via Proton on Linux after their updates. There are solutions for this, but I don't like messing up with my system. Thanks once again for your time and valuable comments.

Exactly opposite from my side. After years of exclusively using Linux I can't imagine someone can use trash like Windows. It's beyond my imagination. Let's take mentioned problems. On Linux when there's some problem you can fix it. Here it seems it's impossible. Furthermore, it's like Windows is doing everything to piss someone - restarts in the worst possible moment. :> Or perhaps it went into hibernation state, but sane OS should wait till all of the jobs are finished.

Not to mention that you will have to. I.e.:

Take it from a long-time Linux user: that wasn't the last time you will experience that/similar.

They have worked fine for years: Cyberpunk and DCS. The last update broke Cyberpunk, but DCS is a different story. It's made by incompetent morons who can't even make it working well under Windows. I just tried to run it and it doesn't connect with my account, so I'm ripped off my paid DLCs so far. To make DCS work under Linux I would have to install some distributables, but I don't like trashing my system with such bloat. I'll wait when it will be fixed with Proton.

Well, as long as you're fine with it I guess. Can't in any case think of anything other than those Defender "controlled folders".

Yeah, I'll try to disable it completely to see if that help. I'll try with some other games, because I already downloaded mentioned two.
