Widevine causing Steam to crash/not load?

I had a problem recently where the Beta Steam client wouldn't run (error with Steamwebhelper not loading). Using the non-beta/stable release was fine

Yesterday the Stable release was updated and that crashed as well, making Steam completely unusable. Whatever was in Beta was moved to Stable.

I looked as some of the Steam files on my PC, and there was a folder named 'Widevine' in my user profile/AppData/Local/Steam folder

I deleted that folder, and not only does Stable work again now but also Beta.
