Why can't two users share a library and both play different games at the same time with Steam Family Sharing?

This point is moot. You realize you can share your xbox one library with a friend and both play the same game at the same time right? People mention that the game devs would have to agree with valve doing it... but its already a thing on xbox so they either already have agreed or they dont have to agree...

try to play together in a multiplayer match doing that.

He doesn't realize you can do the exact same thing with family share.

I'm a little late to this party but I totally understand both sides. But personally I would like people to be able to play on my library while I am on. That is not to say I support both people playing the same game. I think of it like this I have shelves and shelves of physical games, literally my library of video games; if someone wanted to borrow a game they could literally come into my room and borrow it from the shelf. If I wanted to play it I would kick them off and take it so I could play it. But as long as I didn't want to play the game they are playing there should be not problem, that is what people are trying to convey right now.

So to sum it: I would like to share my library as long as both people are playing different games.

They could always remove Family Sharing altogether. It's a privilege, not a right.
yeah but for all the ♥♥♥♥ consoles get xbox one game sharing allows for you to be in the same game

Yeah, the huge amount of games that are on other distribution platforms like GoG and on Steam suggest that it's not devs who are driving Steam's policies, but the other way around.

How many aaa non-first party games show up on GoG, Uplay or Origin(aside from Origin and Uplay having each others games that is)?

Because Valve obviously doesnt want to make sharing games that easy and restrict it as much as possible so more people buy games instead of just getting some friend to share to them

You may not have heard over the noise your axe-grinder is making, but the OP has a good point that has nothing to do with "entitlement". Why add a feature that behaves worse than already existing functionality?

For that matter, why make the feature selective, relatively broken, and basically misleading?

Also, why must we be more thankful to Valve for implementing features than they are to us for supplying their money? Is business not a two way street? Do you really believe that Valve includes these features as some kind of personal favour to each and every one their customers?
It stems from a point-of-sale contingency. Family share lets you share what you already have; it doesn't magically give you extra copies of games for free. Take my XBOX One for example - I share it with my family, but that means only one person can play Fallout 4 at a time and nobody else can use the XBOX while I'm playing it.

The same applies here, only in digital form. It makes perfect sense when you sit down and think about it.
My friend and I share games on xBox as well though. That is an untrue statement. Her xBox is my home and my xBox is her home so we share games this way. They should allow at least game sharing with one other account.

Also late to the party on this topic, but bringing it back up.

I absolutely understand why developers would not sign up for full open access to playing a friend's game. Because then, for every (currently) 5 copies that could have been sold, only 1 will theoretically be sold to a group of 5 people. That's 1/5 the profit they could make. Business wise, I get it makes no sense, so I see why they said "oh well the owner has this huge downside that they can't play ANY of their games, and if they jump on it kicks the other person out of the game which gives us hope that person will just buy the game? ok this should be fine". So I get it......but I wish Valve could renegotiate this.

Drop the # of accounts that can use family share, and let us opt in to "other accounts" by paying them a monthly fee. Something simple, like 5 bucks. Then go on a "royalty" program (like Spotify does with music) with the developers. They can see which games are played via Family Library sharing, so give those developers a share of the 5 dollars (negotiate it so everyone is happy) based on if their game is played. That would be a happy medium for us with kids that want to share our library with our kid, but play another game in the meantime through steam.

It was just a leftover feature from the ill-fated Steam Machines.

Still won't stop abusers willing to share with every random person out there.
