Error code 53 (not using McAfree)
I've been having some issues with a few games (Hitman Absolution and Sniper Elite V2 so far, but won't happen with other games such as To the Moon) and this error, I tried re-downloading the game with the antivirus (Avast) disabled and deleting the file ClientRegistry.blob, but neither fixed the issue.

I also tried to completely delete steam (and all my games data) from my computer and install everything anew, but that didn't fix it either.
Verifying local game cache did nothing as well.

It first happened after downloading the game and pressing "play", a "Completing installation..." would pop up and give me the error code. It may be possible that my computer crashed (for other reasons) after installing but before playing the game (in both cases) .

My specs:
Windows 10 x64
i5-2500k
8,00GB RAM
More than 400GB of free disk space on the Steam Library folder
AMD Raedon HD 7800 series

Well, what virus scanner are you using?

That's too on the list. Uninstall it and see if the game works then.

Nope, that didn't work either, even tried re-installed the game, but nothing.

All PC with free Avast, MCAfee, etc usualy infected with trojans and adware...
the only purpose of these antivirus programs: create a false sense of protection ... and problems with Steam...

Error code 53 just means "Steams servers are currently too busy for your request"... I suggest just trying to wait it out and seeing if it will resolve itself, before creating more issues to the problem.

If you do have issues or dislike your security software, consider checking up on AV TEST:
https://www.av-test.org/en/

Select "Home User" and your "Operating System"... then sort by performance and protection.

You will find application control, performs better and is more secure than mere virus definition detection these days. Hense if your wanted to purchase a quality product, with some serious complete protection (anti-virus, anti-script, anti-phishing, safe banking, firewall, and vulnerability scanner, etc) while still not draining out system resources, consider something like "Kaspersky Internet Security 2016".

If your are looking for a freebee, consider "Avira Antivirus" as possibly one of the best. Free versions will always be limited, but still a lot better than others.

Norton and Mcafee use to be serious resource hogs, but their latest 2015/2016 versions are getting a lot better than they use to be. Still wouldn't be on my top recommended, but most of the bad rep is from previous versions.

I'm not sure about waiting, I first got the error with Hitman on Monday, and it's been more than two months since it happened with Sniper Elite but I had forgotten until today.

Anyway, I'll try waiting a bit more.

Well it can be two things... steam busy or your anti-virus/firewall blocking as mentioned by others. However, I thought you already attempted temp disable or uninstalling it? Then again, steam won't be busy for more than a few hours, else everyone would be screaming.

What other security software are you using?

Windows Defender / Microsoft Security Essentials?

What firewall? Check it's settings and ensure that's not blocking.

It's getting blocked during the updating stage, so if your can allow it's access during this stage (just disabled real-time scanning temporarily, during the install or verifying of files, run and update). Then go back to securing. Just make sure you are protected from infections before/afterwards.
