Weird ripples on my monitor with computer upgrade!
I got a brand new tower this past weekend and glad to have something that isn't pushing six years old, but with the new phase comes a whole set of problems. The tower came with Windows 10 pre-installed on it, didn't really want to upgrade, but had no idea where my Win7 info was, so I stuck with it. I realized soon enough that any game I play has some weird ripples to it, some games are more noticeable than others, from non-Steam games like League of Legends to any game played through EA's service. I don't want to hurt my monitor if it's something that can be fixed and I've been reading about turning off the stupidly always on 'High DPI' setting for everything, but is that the root of the problem? Do I have to set each .exe to do so? Will I have to run all my games through compatibility mode? Any help would be welcome and thank you for your time!

I get the impression you're seeing screen tearing, which would be fixed by turning on vsync.

It's not that kind of ripples, it's hard to explain without using the word though. The game doesn't tear, there's just pulsing ripples, especially in darker colors. I'll test it though to see what happens in a few games.

Could you make a video of that and upload it?

Are you using a VGA cable? My guess is you are using the same cable your old monitor used, but your new monitor and graphics card are capable of "more". If thats the case upgrade to a dvi or hdmi cable and that should resolve your issue. If thats not the case, check your refresh rate, it should probably be set to 60hz.

I've streamed to a few friends when the problem arose and they couldn't see it, but fluxtorrent you might be on the money because I am using my old cable. The old cable even has a huge extension piece on it because it wouldn't plug into my old tower, so I'm going to try to see about finding a cable to test this, thanks everyone for the quick response!

Yeah I'm guessing thats a VGA cable with a DVI converter then. Getting a straight up dvi cable should solve it for you then.

Yes, that might be the cause. If the problem persists, though, try recording it with a camera.

Yessir, you're completely right. I'm not the best with tech, so coming to you guys really does make all the difference. Thanks again.

To add my my already firm non-understanding, a pretty basic hdmi cable would work, right? Just pick one up off Amazon or so? I'm always overly worried about messing something up, so I have to check all my chickens before they hatch.

hdmi works as well yes.
Turn on vsync.

Vsync fixes that problem
