[POSSIBLY FIXED] Steam constantly schedules my downloads for 5 minutes later
For the past few months, my Steam keeps scheduling my downloads for 5 minutes later, whether it is an update or a full game and I keep having to click resume. Sometimes, the download will go on for about 30 minutes before this happens and other times it will happen every second. Waiting for the 5 minutes and clicking resume to force it to start seems to make no difference in how often this issue occurs.

I've tried reinstalling Steam, changing my download server, changing the install drive, unticking the auto schedule option, uninstalling my anti-virus/disabling firewall, forwarding the Steam DL ports and restarting my router. My internet is not bad (70Mbits DL speed) and this issue ONLY happens on Steam.

This problem may have started when I rebuilt my PC but it may have started before that. Or maybe a little after that. I don't even remember anymore. I'm at the end of my rope here. It shouldn't be taking 10 hours to download a game that should only take 1 hour to complete unless I'm babysitting it. I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Edit 1: I was using a Netgear Wireless Adapter[www.amazon.co.uk] and decided to try my old belkin one. It seems to be working fine now, no interruptions so far. I tried the Netgear one in both a 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports and the issue kept occuring so I'm guessing Steam has a problem with that adapter or there was a driver/configuration issue somewhere. For now, I'm gonna stick to my old belkin one. If there is no Edit 2, then I no longer have any problems.

If you start a game, or start anything full screen, it will likely to stop/pause downloads. Basically your machine needs to be left in an idle state whilst downloading, surfing the net and using non full screen applications like Word or outlook is ok to use and wont stop your downloads. If this is not the case then something else is causing your downloads to pause, check your connection using testmy.net for consistency.

This happens even when I idle. I've left my machine on overnight with only a Steam window open before and still the issue occurs. I used testmy.net and my connection was consistent all 3 times.

Could try a different download server, or see if you have any schdule settings enabled. Goto steam and click on Steam in top left corner, goto settings, then downloads, try different download region and make sure no limits are in place below it.

Tried that before and tried it again just now for the sake of it and no luck.
I checked the content_log.txt in the steam directory and it says this:

I would attempt todo a steam backup of the games you play the most and move them somewhere temporary like the desktop, uninstall steam, but also go to the steam directory and delete the steam folder, run ccleaner registry cleaner, reboot, reinstall steam. Sounds like somewhere along the lines maybe a recent upgrade or a failed steam update or a system crash is likely the cause.

Np, and ohh I see, yeh ive come across that before, some types of cards can become overloaded and they fail, requireing them to be unplugged and plugged in again. If the wireless adapter has an actual program/utility you can use rather than using Windows built in wireless features, use that instead and your problem should go away. Unless the adapter doesnt have a utility for your version of windows in which case thats a compatibility problem and likely means your adapter is getting old.

Hey OP, did you ever find a fix for your Netgear or did you end up sticking with the Belkin? After months of fighting with steam I finally found out my A6210 was my issue and found this thread in the search. Hoping to get it working if possible since my workaround adapter is only N.

I stuck with my Belkin since. Seems like there's a weird issue with the adapter and Steam itself. It's a shame since my A6210 just sits on my shelf collecting dust now.

Strange tips maybe but I've had this problem for a while. My quickfix is to start a download from majorgeeks.com and then magically my steam downloads don't get rescheduled.
I have no idea why this happens but it has worked flawlessly for me:)

I'm using Google Chrome and when I stream from youtube at the same time as I'm downloading from Major Geeks the steam download goes faster and smoother:)

Go figure;)

Thanks guys. I ended up getting a new adaptor that's also N/AC. I got this [www.amazon.com] and it works perfectly. Too bad about the netgear as it was a very nice adaptor otherwise.

This may seem crazy, but I have the same problem using a computer with a USB wifi adapter, although mine is TPLink. I tried a suggestion on another thread to watch a netflix show while downloading, and it solved my problem. downloading just fine. If I pause netflix (to grab another beer), then it pauses on steam. restart both, and it downloads just fine. I think it has something to do with higher bandwidth for some reason, tried different servers and everything. I have a pretty beefy business line at my home. This has to be tied to the steam download protocols somehow, perhaps a bug in download speed comparing package fidelity before they are fully downloaded or something.

Yeah its the Netgear usb wifi adapter, I have the N900 where I kept having download pauses, so I switched to my Belkin USB wifi adapter and have no issues.
