Friends Chat Messages
Hi All

How do I get to Chat messages, so I can read what my friend has sent me. (NOT Chat history) which I know Valve dosent support. Will the unread chat message appear in the little green envelope in the top right hand corner Or have I missed a tab or something. If its not anything to do with the green envelope then I am baffled, because I cant find anything else. I only have four Categories inside the green envelope which are New Comments/new items in your inventory/new invites/new gifts and thats it. Will the chat category appear when I receive a unread chat message. I read somewhere that the green envelope is only to do with forum discussions. Is this true? If this is the case then surely unread chat messages you receive from friends wouldnt be listed here. If so where are they?

Correct. It's present only if you've got Unread Messages.

False, the Unread Message is all about PM.

Easy way for you to test is to have your friend send you a message while you go offline, then come back and see that button.

When you receive an unread chat message, it will show up under the new comments section of the notifcations.

I thought the new comments section was only to do with discussions on the forums NOT chat messages with friends:)

There's a separate button.

Here's a demonstration:

  3. http://i.imgur.com/AI5q5Ne.png

If I clicked [View Unread Messages] on the Steam -client, it would open up the chat box.

I checked the 2nd link. So as everyone is saying it does appear in the green envelope when you receive an unread chat message:) I thought perhaps you had to get to chat messages another way.

Click on Friends tab in the top left hand corner of steam and you will be presented with a drop down menu. Click on add friend then a search box will appear:)

Hi Truetehb

Just done some research on Emoticon. Does it mean angry. If so why are you angry. I am only trying to help oxob17. If I am mistaken by the meaning then I am sorry.

Hi oxob17

When you click on Add friend it will send a friend invite:) then they will either accept or decline. Hope this helps.

Hi Guys

I found out I can get to my Unread Chat Messages (Green Envelope) if I access Steam from my browser. Strange thing is when I open the Steam UI on my desktop there is no category Unread Chat messages listed in the drop down menu of the Green Envelope. Why is this category available when getting to Steam through my browser yet NOT available when opening the Steam UI on my desktop. Being I always use the Steam UI on my desktop AND not through the browser, how will I know I have a Chat message waiting. Is there a way to get this option within the Steam UI on the desktop of my computer.

It shows up fine on my client too IF there's an Unread Chat Message in place.

If there's none for you, opt-out of using custom skins and refresh the Steam client files.

By the way, oxob17 won't be adding friends with his/her limited profile,

Sorry for being SO dense. Are you saying the Unread Chat Message will only appear within the Steam Client UI on my desktop (Green Envelope) if there is a chat message to read. Why is the Chat message menu always present when you access Steam from your browser:)
