controller works in big picture mode menu but not in games

title says it all really.
It works navigating the big picture mode menu but doesnt registrer at all in game.
havent a clue what im doing wrong.

Sometimes things suddenly don't respond once you switch from Big Picture to your game.

Press the Steam button a couple of times; and switch back and forth.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'm out of ideas.

You haven't even mentioned what controller you use.

I'm thinking that you're trying to use a DInput controller with games that only support XInput controllers(X360 & XB1 controllers).
If you want as many games to work with a controller as possible, you''ll want to find some XInput emulation software(If you have a PS4 controller, DS4Windows will do wonders here) or you'll have to get an Xbox 360 controller, Xbox One controller, or a Steam Controller(the best option out of the three in terms of compatibility).
