This is odd. I can play music CDs but DVDs won't work...
When I try to "open disc" using the VLC player it immediately stops responding.
If you bothered to inform yourself you'd know there is. If you were one of the people who upgraded from 7 right away you should have gotten it, otherwise Microsoft charges like $15 bucks for it in the app store. It is called the "Windows DVD Player".

I'll give this a shot, thank you and no, the drive works perfectly fine with everything but dvds.
Because I never had to download a third party program to get a movie to work. Things aren't as simple as they used to be clearly.
MPHC retains its design but has tons of features. VLC isn't really recommended due bad picture quality, unless you have a very weak machine. I used it for a while, but when I spotted how full HD 10bit h264 anime looks trough VLC and how it looks trough MPHC + KCP, I never looked back. Anime fans are picky you know
