Yes, you do also need to be confirming the trades. Do you have Confirmation of Trades enabled? "You will receive an email or a notification in the Steam Mobile App to confirm trade offers which move items from your account."
Click the Edit Profile button then click the My Privacy Settings tab. If Confirmation of Trades is set to Disabled, click the circle by Enabled then click the Save Changes button.

Items arent returned either, thats the whole poimt of exchanging items! If you want your items to return, dont trade them in the first place.
