im nvidia biased though and have not kept up on amd as have had driver issues throughout owning there products also if your just using a 1080 screen 970 should be able to drive most games above 60fps wont matter though if your not using a 120htz screen but shows that it will be good for a long while with current games
also if your using linux or plan on making a steam machine nvidia has good drivers for those platforms and the new nvidia cards sip power there the most power effient desktop cards right now
to be honest though it all comes down to money if you can get a nvidia card you will get better support and more goodies
amd on the other hand you get a little more power per dollar but bad drivers and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ support and not reallly any goodies other then vram but wont matter much if you just have a 1080 screen

The R9 390 is more similar to the GTX 970. Make sure you have a beefy PSU for the 390X. It uses much more power than the 980.
as for the amd, im concerned about the drivers. but on the other hand, nvidia musnt get a graphics card monopoly cuz then we're screwed
