By default, Steam delays updates to games you haven't played recently so it can spread out the downloads from the content servers. That way, if a game releases a gigabyte update to ten thousand players, Steam doesn't have to send ten terabytes of data at the same time.
The scheduling came about back in 2019/2020 when lockdowns were in place because of covid to help ease network congestion.
It was also a suggestion to add a third option to the update settings between right now and only until you launch the game. So this has provided a happy compromise.
To bypass the scheduling, you'll have to set each game's updates to High Priority. That way to will automatically download and install the update as soon as it is available.
OK but I don't think it's ever updating any game. If I leave it alone the number of games that are showing "update queued" just gets bigger and bigger. Eventually, I have to go through and manually say "update" to every game which is very annoying because when I sit down to Steam it's usually to play a game not stare at it while I update 10 games sequentially.
No. Not really that cool. Having to set every game to high priority is pretty idiotic when it was already set to the option of "always keep this game updated". What is even the point of that option if it doesn't do anything?
Regardless, thanks for the info. At least you gave me an option.
The default option does just that. However, it also includes the aforementioned scheduling process. It still always keeps the game updated. It's just not happening as fast as you want it to.
I guess you didn't read how I said it's not happening slowly. It's not happening at all. They just pile up more and more over time so....yeah. Cool.
Yeah I messed around with that. Doesn't seem to do anything. I even set the schedule time to the entire day (like 4am to 2am or something so it could literally update at almost anytime).
No problem here steam update game at 01:00 ( this earlig morning )
