Random Friend Requests - What Kind of Scam is This?
Hi everyone,

For the past two days, I've been getting friend requests from random people, and the messages I receive from them say something like: "Yo" or "Okay, I'm adding you to play CS or PUBG."

I know this is some kind of scam, but can anyone explain how it actually works? What are they trying to achieve with these friend requests?

I'd appreciate any insights or experiences you can share!

Thanks in advance.

It could go several ways. They might build up a rapport before sending you a phishing link. It's possible your account is already compromised and they're looking to take the next step and get you to initiate a trade that will get switched over to someone else via bots. You have several items in your inventory, and that might make you a target. The showcase in your profile is like hanging a sign on your house that reads, "Hey burglars! I have expensive stuff in here!"

Just in case, secure your account:

- Scan for malware. https://www.malwarebytes.com/
- Deauthorize all devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
- Change your password on a secure device.
- Generate new back up codes. https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage
- Revoke the api key (If there is one. The field should be blank.) https://steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey

And it sounds like you have this part figured out, but in practice don't accept friend requests from randos, and don't even trust the people you think you can trust, since they could be hijacked. Keep your Steam trades on Steam, and don't use any third party trading/gambling sites. They're all varying degrees of scam.

You see that knife skin you are advertising to the world that you have in your showcase?

That's why.

Don't trust strangers online and nothing bad can happen 🤷 simple

True, I don't trust anyone. Scamming is a big business today—Facebook, Steam, Discord, etc.
