But if there was a workaround to bypass the $5 requirement, then it wouldn't be much of a requirement then. It's there for a good reason. You can still get and play games on Steam. You can still get friends as I mentioned above. Everything else is just extra, and if you want the extras you'll need to find a way to fund your account with $5.
Limited accounts can also create quick invite codes ("friend codes").
