Report a translation problem
A different way would be to add the line
(leave an empty space behind "Steam.exe") to your desktop shortcut.
This will turn off all notifications about chat messages, items, achievements and so on during games.
P.S.: In the latter case, you won't be able to take screenshots through F12 anymore.
There really ought to be a way to turn off different categories of notifications separately though. Without turning off the entire overlay.

Here I am in March of 2023 hoping for the same thing and searching... nope just this thread came up.
Guess it's time to write another well thought out message to throw at their "support" wall so I can watch it bounce off of it and fall into the mountain of other logical requests pilled in the Valley of the Ignored...
This is in the current beta UI that released on April 27th and the notification settings had been added on May 19th...

It will automatically opt you out of the beta once the UI updates goes live for everyone.
If you do, click the notification envelope, click view all and look to the right and click Settings.
