A game crash keeps crashing my whole PC. Looking for advice.
**Resolved. I ran sfc /scannow through CMD, Windows detected and repaired errors. Then had to uninstall and reinstall ARK. Game now runs again without crashing. **

Howdy,

My first time posting here, but I've run into a rather odd problem that keeps happening. As of Tuesday ASA has started hard crashing, and when it crashes, I can't force close through Task Manager. It's not like the old crashes, where I'd get an error message either. Nothing ever pops up. Now it crashes every time I open it, within about 90 seconds. When I try 'End Task' in Task Manager the game stops using CPU, GPU, Network, and Disk, but it continues to use memory. If I hit 'Exit Game' in Steam the button greys out and says 'Exiting' and in my library, it will even say 'closing' beside the game, but it never closes. In the meantime, Windows Explorer begins to fail. I'll be unable to open folders, and access things like the snip tool, nor can I open new browser tabs.

I've reinstalled Steam. I've reinstalled the game. I've updated my graphics drivers. Nothing so far stops it from happening.

Oh, and then I can't shut down or restart the PC, it will get stuck trying infinitely. Ran a full virus scan as well. So every time this happens I have to hold down the power button and snuff my poor PC out.

I've got over 700 hours in it and have not had issues before this.

Specs:
Windows 10 Pro
32g ram
AMD Radeon 6950
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I'll cross-post this to other places, and if I find a solution I'll try to share it here for anyone else who may have a similar problem.

Thanks in advance,

This just one game, or all games? If one game what that game name?

Have done error check on system? If not press ctrl + R then type CMD then click run this opens commands promot, type in without quote "sfc /scannow" once it finish restart PC by click on start menu powner button, and click restart this will wipe memory on RAM so doesn't store any data that should be wipes so no error remaining, once back in test to see if issue resolved.

Do you use any 3rd party app that hooks, or take resources to scan things repeatly? If use check ensure they're not the problem.

Lastly check the temps on your hardware ensure that not the issue, if overheating can face issues.

Do recheck board page about BIOS update, to make sure its not that issue.

ps.
You also seem to have IGPU on that board, you might need to turn it off so main plug-in gpu cared is main card, or turn it off in windows device manager. or in bios turn igpu off.

Thank you, I didn't realize the onboard was actually enabled. I disabled it, which was a performance gain, but didn't prevent the game crashes. Still, it's progress so thanks all the same.

Thanks for this. I ruled out overheating, but I appreciate you considering it since I hadn't said so in the post. I'll have to test the rest once I have the time to get into the system. Thanks again.

The sfc/scannow detected errors, and once those were repaired I no longer have a full system crash when the game crashes. I'm still working the game itself, but thank you because the system crashes were most worrisome.

Sounds a lot like a memory issue, either maxing out from a memory leak or a bad stick of ram.

Give this a shot.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run command. Step 2: Type in “mdsched.exe” and hit Enter. Step 3: Choose between the two options (either to restart and check the RAM now or to check the RAM at the next system startup) and proceed with the diagnostic test.

EDIT: After reinstalling the game fully, post /scannow, the problem has resolved. Thanks again.

I missed your reply, but did manage to find a solution tied to a Windows error. I had actually done a ram test after someone on another forum also suggested it. Thank you for the recommendation.

Glad your issue been resolved.

Just got future reference if you ever run into issue with OS such as weird bugs that causing whole system problems, or everything becomes slow for some odd reason out of no where, doing simple error might fix issues.
sfc /scannow

Now if you run into issue where say can't perform, or unable to fix with the SFC scannow, you do the command below this does error check on your OS itself if there's a corrupted files that couldn't be fix, this does an Online comparison where it matches your OS to Microsoft server to ensure all files are correct with no corruption.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If it fixes the issue, then you can do the SFC scan again, make sure do restart each time to have effects take place.
